You would want to watch that the paddle doesn't get caught in the lip and come around and insert itself in your a$$.

Yeah seems to me the paddle should be on the other side in barrels. Certainly didn't work with goat boats having the paddle on the wave face side. Would always get sucked up the face.

That paddles fine were it is Def one of the best pics yet for sure Rich. I got my first proper barrel on a meaty beach break down here on tues on my backhand Cant even remember where I put the paddle The good part was it happened right in front of mate looking in at me as he was sitting on his board.

Barrels on my 6'4 surfboard - no problem!

on a SUP - its pretty scary getting shacked with all that potential noggin busting board in there with you - think i'll stick to being out on the wall somewhere..

problem is that SUPs get you into heaving waves so easily (no hideous zero gravity air drop required) that the temptation to get in the pit is always there.

I'm confused - where's it going to end up?

In your face or up your a$$?

IMHO,I think the paddle is on the correct side of
his body.otherwise he would be a twisted mess

Agree with you Brooko, got a couple of barrels (nothing like the photo) to tuck in it is better on the wave side skimming the wave face as you would your hand. Backhand I have the blade on the wave face but the shaft away from the face. Like a lay back without having to bent back, good for old farts like me who are not that flexible. I am sure the whipper snappers will tweek it and do it better.

ps sick photo

Yeah same Hilly , I had my paddle the same like doing a larry layback, Mate you would be getting some serious shade up there (north west)

If it is then it would be even more impressive, backdoor is shallow.

Interesting topic - the paddle in the tube one that is. I can only speak from goat boat experience, but the ONLY way to ride tubes successfully on a ski is to hold the paddle on the opposite side to the wave face. Have been watching a few vids of SUP riding barrels (on Youtube) and interestingly the guys on their forehand seem to struggle more keeping the paddle positioned than the guys on their backhand (who have the paddle on the outside.

I guess time will tell. A biggish round barrel like the one on this page would be less of an issue than a smaller one. I have surfed Backdoor on a goatie at about that size - very interesting

You still have to be careful of the lip hitting the paddle when it is on the out side of your board. I find that I prefer to keep it on the inside and lean on it a bit to stall then release. I have only had a few clean ones when time stands still, mostly cover ups.

Notice the blade of the paddle in the naish photo, it seems to have a gap in the centre of the bottom.

Backhand looks so much more natural with the paddle. Mind you this one is large enough to drive a truck through!!
