Cheap EPS, cheap glass, cheap resin, left over paint, a scrap of deck grip, an old fin box & a fin found on the beach.
14' x 27" & 8kg ......... who cares if it dont shine like a shop job....

Wow that looks great and very fast , it will fly in the flat but I think offshore it will be a handful looks very tippy.Top job at a bargin price

i don't know much about that side of things, some i don't know anything, but what is the black thing at the front of deck grip?

I don't think you could do better than that for $200. I'd have trouble fixing a ding in my board for that much. Looks like it would go super fast in a straight line, very light also.

Hey LSD that board's turned out great.. It sure looks fast.. You will have to bring it up and do a big down-winder on the bay with us.

btw.. This Friday (tomorrow) is looking good (NW @ 30+ knots) but maybe a bit too much west in it.. I'll suss it out and let you know.. We could go from Port Melb across to Sandy I think.. I'll check with fireman Dave.

Paddled it in the Anglesea river today, very easy to move through the water, with very little effort it glides along at 7 k's/hour, bending the paddle it moves at 10k's.

A breakdown of the cost of materials to build the board;

EPS Foam.....$70
Glass...........$78
Resin...........$25
Legrope plug $2

Old PU 2 Pack filler & topcoat $30 worth if I had to buy it
Recycled finbox $10 if I had to buy it
Deck pad was scrap from Gboards.

Plus a bit of sandpaber & elbo grease

None of the race boards have stringers. It just adds weight .

What do we need a stringer for?......maybe it gives you a straight line to walk to the nose?
Unless you add thick timber they do little structuraly....they just add weight.
(appropriate skins can give more strength)

What I have tried to convey to SUP,ers out there is that a very usable board can be made for very little outlay......if they are at all DIY inclined.
My next job is to make my 11 year old son a new wave stick, 8' x 27" it will cost less than $150
It will weigh buggerall.... less than 5 kg I think.
These boards are made like most high performance surfboards, & they have a limited life expectancy.... for $150 bucks who cares. You can afford to try new ideas as they come to mind.
When a good design is settled on, by vacuuming a 3mm PVC deck skin on then next board, they become very tough
Adds to the cost....& work....I'm alergic to work!

Hi Bend Dover,
Surprisingly none have creased ....yet.
The EPS core is about the weakest foam know to man, (but, light & cheap) so its not considered structural at all, a join using Qcell would actualy inprove strength in that local area buy beter suporting the laminate skins. It really surprises me that the EPS exists with the pounding it gets. But then most SUPing is done at relativley slow speed.
Some EPS/epoxy kiteboards made too light in the bottom skin will come out looking like a golf ball from the surface chop alone.
I am now making the boards intensionaly weak to find failure points & minimise the excess baggage.
The 6 I have made so far have been going well for about 3 & 1/2 years now with some real lard arse riders on them, the biggest waves to land on them would be a mushy 6'...but then a smaller hollow wave landing in the wrong spot will do it every time!
The strength of SUP's comes from their thickness, a large "I beam" & the fact that good boards are glassed in epoxy, it has an elongation before failure similar to glass, so it supports the glass far better.
Polyester resin glassed surfboards for example have an elongation of about 2% so they fail much easer than tough epoxy/glass.
Because the resin fractures before the glass, it no longer suports the glass & they generaly fail in 2 stages, plus they are thiner than SUP's meaning a minimal I beam section.
The only real issue with "cheap" single skin glassing is its poor dint resistance.
Improvements in the single skin glassing can include laying the cloth then pulling the diagonals to then change the glass from a 0- 90 deg orientation to a 45 x 45 deg double bias, this also compacts the glass & increases the glass content per given area, giving a bit more dig resistance.....but then nothing beats PVC sandwitch....too much farting around for proto's

The resin to build a 14 ft board in the US cost $100. You have a really cheap resin supplier.

But I'm not able to buy in 55 gallon drums, so that might be my problem.

Hi Lance,

Check an Aust surf industry website www.shapers.com.au for materials/prices Kinetics 6 kg pack is $129....enough to do almost 2.5 14' boards (....unless you spill it all over you feet! (The resin I used is half that price in 200kg drums)
So buying in 6kg packs, about $55 per 14' board would be close here in Aust.
The 14' board pictured took an average about 1.2 kg a side.......maybe that why its so light? Remember...resin wont make a board strong a high glass/resin ratio will.

The difference between a good glasser & a bad one is the amount of resin used per board, it can take time to learn.

There are a couple of reasons to use a stringer and the most common one is to set the rocker, I know it will still flex but not nearly as much.

The other reason is to set the rocker for vacuum bagging PVC or timber. A stringer is not needed for the bottom but when you want to vac the deck with all its compound curves and the extra pressure you have to use, the shape tends to flatten out and a stringer helps here.

By using a stringer you don't have to make up a rocker jig for use in the bag to set the rocker.

Sure it adds weight, but it can reduce the hassle, especially for custom construction where every design element is changed to suit the customers requirements.

I'm gonna do a board the same way.....made my own boards for years now & had problems with some people when ordering custom made.........so I'll do it myself....I'll have a very good board & made the way I want it.............the way to go !!!!!
