The makeover of the naish line was because of Dave and if that didn't happen they would have floundered for a while.
I have seen some of Dave Kalama's custom shapes he's a good shaper.

Quite possibly the most confusing Press release I have ever read???

Why would you announce that? Wouldn't it make more sense to allow the pics etc in the system of Dave to run their course to keep selling product.

These kind of announcements are usually made by the athlete or the new sponsor to announce what new and exciting thing is going on now.

Makes me think Dave done something wrong and they are trying to distance themselves from him???? I'm sure that isn't the case. Is this weird or how it's done in the sail industry??

I'd have to agree with you CMC. It was a short artical, no reason for the split and as you said the athlete normally makes the statement not the company. Had a look on Dave's website but nothing there, Surfers Village seemed to have the exclusive on this report (I smell something fishy), but the truth will be when all of Dave's pictures are off the website and advertising, so I wouldn't panic just yet DJ.

.. No panic.. Just a little sad.. I liked Dave.

Maybe someone gave him a better deal or Naish were asking too much of him.. It could even before personal or family reasons.. It seems like the news is true.. Unless it's contract renewal time and it's a way to pressure Naish.

Just had a quick look on the naish site and he is off the team list. I wounder if it may have also had something to do with Harold Iggys death considering they worked close together on the Naish SUP shapes ( just putting it out there as an idea). Naish is coping a pounding at the start of 2012, hopefully the year gets better for everyone.

So what next for Dave?

Maybe Naish have done to Dave what India should do to Sachin, Dravid, VVS, Sehwag.........

If Dave starts making his own range, I assume he won't do a 12'6" race board.

Liked??? Jeez, he's not dead.

It is what they call silly season with windsurfing, with riders changing teams left right and centre currently - between seasons for the PWA. Maybe due to the back ground of Naish in windsurfing they simply have contract renewal at the same time for all their international riders?

Hi All,

Just wanted to specify that Dave was a great asset to Naish super cool and amazing athlete.

To be even more clear Harold Iggy was the ONLY shaper for Naish and got a lot of feedback from key riders on the team like Kai, Robby, Michi and Dave as well.

All in all he is the mastermind behind all those classic shapes that we have all been enjoying since the 60's for surf boards and custom Naish boards since '79 to the present production SUP boards we are enjoying today.

This maybe a silly question but who owns Naish these days? Given all the consolidation in the industry in recent years who pulls the strings and controls the purse?

I thought Naish owned Naish. I could of course be wrong (that has occurred in the past). If I saw a kalama in the rack next to a naish, mmmm maybe i would be tempted but it would be a big decision.

You're right.. That should be.. 'I like Dave' .. and I thought it was great that he was a part of Naish..

I will continue to like him no matter what future brand he is involved with.. I got to meet Dave and spend time with him at one of the Mambo's in Merimbula many moons ago.

He's a great guy.. I hope his new boards are a huge sucsess.. Can't wait to see what they're like.. I wonder if they will be down-wind boards..

Said he only started shaping a few months ago. It will take him a while to learn how to get what he wants without serious help on the designs, especially with race boards and even more especially if he is using CNC.

It would be great to see his boards though, I'm sure he'd have some amazing ideas.

I was lucky to spend an hour on the train to Brisbane chatting to Dave and Jim from QB last year. I concur with all above.

I think you'll find he has been around shaping so long (I know he had a big influence on Sean Ordenez windsurf shapes at one stage) that really all he needs to know is how to get his idea to the foam, I don't think the design side of things will be too much of an issue. Much of the theory about what works and what doesn't is likely already there, for both DW and surf.

It will be interesting to see where he takes this, his own company? Small Hawaiian operation or larger? or start shaping for someone else? You never know, maybe that little sticker on the back of the Naish boards will one day say Kalama instead of Iggy.

It raises an eyebrow that a particular point has been drilled home;
- Harold Iggy was the only shaper at Naish

But now Iggy is gone, wouldn't they want someone like Dave to help oversee the next chapter of development?

Whilst I admire the work of a good shaper, it's actually not rocket science. A guy like Dave has probably been mentally shaping since he was 15 or 16. It won't be hard for him to convert that knowledge into shaping physical foam shapes.
