Yesterday I checked out the new 9'5" Hokua at SHQ and they said that it's a demo board if I wanted to take it for a spin.. My friend was their with me and he wanted to demo the 9'6" Coreban so we took both boards so we could compare them at Big Left the next day (today).

It was cold a crappy weather today at Big Left at dawn.. freezing cold and there were only small waves.. JC joined us on his little Starboard Pod'thingie and I think his paddle was longer that the board.. I had an ice cream headache after a couple of hours from falling in so much but it was still great fun.. Here's a short vid from today.. and some pics that I took yesterday of the new 9'5".. Both boards were great.. JC's little pumpkin seed board was amazing and way too small for me.

Good to see a bit of old fashioned "wife swapping" at the end of the vid

So you didn't catch a wave on the Pod then?

Hi PT .. When just kneeling on the Pod if I leaned back the slightest amount the board would quickly tip me off the back and the board would rocket into the air in front of me.. If I leaned forward I would face plant the cold water without warning and the board would flick up behind me.. I don't know how JC paddles it.. Notice in my vid he reaches past the nose of the board with each stroke.. .. It's like a big boogie board..

Go Webber!!!

How is the 2012 9'5" Hokua compared with the 2011 9'0 Mana? Same volume from memory 140 L, is it less stable, same or more stable??

It's defiantly tippier then the 9'5" Mana.. I've not paddled the 9'0" Mana.. It's slightly more stabble than my 9'0" Hokua.. We didn't really get the waves to test it's performance.. It's amazing how icy cold water makes you wobbly..

I only got one decent wave on the Hokua and didn't try the Coreban. Hokua felt nice, very stable - that might just be compared to the Starboard though! It's a long time any many boards since my old 9'6 Naish but I think the 9'5 feels looser and a really great all round board for a bigger guy.

Funny thing, after riding a 7'4 for a while pretty much everything feels like a 'gun'. The POD is a bit of a PIG off the wave but so much fun when you are on, the drive is the thing that constantly amazes me and keeps me coming back for more.

hello dj, thanks for posting those photos of the new 9'5" hokua it is a board i was soon hoping to get my greasy mits on, how does it compare to the old 9'6" hokua? i think the volume should be just about right for my mid length wave board, i have a jimmy lewis 9'1" quad as my small board. Apparently we are part of the same professional brotherhood just different states! regards

Hi.. The new 9'5" and old 9'6" are very different boards and the biggest difference being that the deep swallow tail is gone.. I think the new one is more stable and has much better grip and also a better deck shape for standing on.. It also has the new handle and the board feels lighter.. I was amazed how well it turned and seems to accelerate once tipped on a rail.. You should try and get hold of this demo board to try because I think it belongs to Naish.

Yes.. Been a big fan since seeing him do 'I'm going home' in the Woodstock movie.

That song brings back memories of my youth and playing that song so loud in my car it's a wonder I can even hear now..

I have another Ten Years After song planed for my next vid.. even though it's more like 30yrs after now..
