I'm new to stand up and have only had one go so far on I think it was called a Lard and was about 12'. It seemed pretty easy but there were no waves. I have been reading on this sight about distance and coz I'm recovering from a bad accident and am looking for some general fitness was wondering which was best for this, surfing or distance, thankyou for any advice

I've lost 6 kgs only because my mate was, and i say was, fat!

If you are recovering from an accident I'd go for distance paddling - you don't want to risk another one. The great thing about the flat water/distance paddling is that you set the pace.

IMO flat water SUP'ing will work your heart and lunges more and surfing will develop power and flexibility.. I reckon a bit of both is the way to go.

Laird Hamilton is more a surfing type body but the Chuck patterson does both and he's also built like the Hulk.

If you're coming back from a broken leg flat water paddling would be best but it wont hurt to hit the waves every now and then if the waves are small.

Check out this guy for low body fat and good muscle tone.. He looks like more your flat water paddler.

Hey Slyborg...I find I get sorer from surfing. Maybe it's all the quick/sharp/hard strokes and pivot turning and falling and getting up many times and falling and pushing up and trying to balance while stationary. Where as distance tends to work more cardio and I think weight lose. Just IMO. Both are fun though.

Surfing in 6 ft beach breaks would be the ultimate workout, way more of a work out than you can imagine Surfing a 2ft point break would not even be comparable It all depends, real broadrange question right there!
