I watched the Stand Up World Tour last night on Fuel.

I felt embarrassed and I was only sitting with my wife. Given that it was right after Kelly Slater on Fins I had the sudden urge to sell my SUP surfboard. This is what was televised and beamed to the world as the leading edge of the sport. Kooky, flat, slidey, ugly turns, over using the paddle to paddle across waves, just the ugliest surfing I have ever seen, honestly. Kai and Peyo were OK in the final though. The conditions were ugly and tricky i admit. The Sunset footage was amazing on the other hand.

It got me thinking.

After watching Jackson, Jacko, Kieran and other assorted rippers around home and the Dogman on his own vids the surfing done here in OZ is as good or better than anywhere. I got up this morning and watched another Dogman vid to cure myself of those ugly memories. Thanks Dogman, I vote we send you to Canberra to give some direction to a government nobody wants....

yep. The sunset action was a lot more impressive. Would be good to see the Aussie boys up against them in some quality waves.

Perhaps it's personal taste but the thing I like about Dogmans vids and the other guys I mentioned is to me that they don't actually look they are riding SUP. I know that sounds silly but it's the polished style and using the wave and rails that makes me think that.

They surf like shortboarders in the way they link turns together and position the board in trim on the face. I hate seeing the paddle being used on waves, it looks shocking! It actually looks like it dissapears for the good guys.

Of course you use it as a lever to lean on and to pull through turns but apart from that paddling across waves is f-ugly!

i think some of rest of the world agrees with you fellas, dogman vids are found on just about every other sup site in the world ( but then again so is Dj...lol gotta love his work butt)

Agree. It seems strange seeing pro's using the paddle to create speed along the wave rather than using their skill. It looks really ugly!

Also agree CMC about the World Tour. Although I'm turning flatter on my new board,
I'm working on some technique changes to get the thing back on it's rail. Thats what
it's about!

I found a similar thing on that French site from a French guy who knew me from goatboating. You can put their posts through a web based translater....it's pretty funny how seriously they take their forums!
