A mate of mine Matty was chatting with me one night at OG a couple of years ago as we looked out at people trying to catch the fat gutless waves.

He said man Dont Take A Knife To A Gun Fight.

The point was simple if your going to surf OG and your 100 kg on a 6'2 shorty chances are its not going to be a great day at the office.

There is no point in getting upset about not being able to catch waves. Simply change your equipment.

In the last week catching waves down here has been like shooting fish in a barrel if you have even the basics down pat.

Its simple if you cant catch it you cant ride it!

I wonder how many people would walk up the ramp with a huge smile on thier face if they went a foot longer in board length?

Very good point OG, I see often and sometimes mention to the person,gee mate you need one of these,meaning something with more volume.99% of the time their reply is a nod and smile yes I wish I had one.Guys riding the wrong equipment for the conditions on offer makes it less fun for them,sometimes its an image thing that they want to look like a pro walking up the beach but did they really enjoy their surf I think not.My shortboarding days are well and truly behind me,so if its fat the board with more volume gets the nod, sucky the performance board goes out,micro small its sup time,having more options gives more quality water time.

I just need to say that quite often the guy out there on inadequate equipment for the conditions may just be there because he loves it but doesn't have the resources to kit himself up for all conditions. Up until recently I have not been able to afford any other boards, I still struggle but it is a little easier now.

I made do with my short board as it was all I could afford, 1 short board and 1 wetsuit for ALL conditions for pretty much most of my life. This doesn't mean I wasn't watching the guys on the mals and wishing I was them. Everyday I was out in small crumbly conditions I wished I had a mal, then the SUP's started appearing more often and I watched them with some sort of awe. I knew one day I would have one or more of these boards, I looked into ways of building boards because I couldn't afford purchase prices but I had all the tools I needed to build my own.

Now I have 1 SUP, 1 McTav fireball evo, a couple of shortboards, an alaia several skateboards, kiteboards and kite,

BUT......

I still remember having nothing.

Have had the same experience when living in the big smoke. I guess down here if you want to use a mal or a SUP and you dont have one many people will loan you one. Often guys will give a board to someone less fortunate, part of the reason I love living here is the community spirit.

You make a very valid point though.
