Hey guys just a timely reminder to watch your precious gear on top of or inside your car this summer.

With so many new crew getting into the sport we cannot assume everyone knows the damage heat can do to your precious gear!

In fact any prolonged exposure to heat can cook both boards and paddle blades as they are both made of epoxy, which sets with heat. Reheat it enough and it goes soft and can easily deform.

I had a red board outside the other day for less than an hour and you could not touch the paint. Another board was left outside in a bag (to stop the radiant heat) and it was cooking less than an hour later.

Neither board delaminated but it was a reminder how quickly boards (especially coloured boards) can heat up, in or out of bags. Dark coloured grip also heats up very quickly.

Most paddles being black are also prone to over heating, especially the blades as they often have a foam core that wants to expand when heated. Expose it to the heat for long enough and you could get a deformed paddle, especially in your car where you get radiant heat through the glass.

Better to be safe than sorry!!

i wrapped my board in bubble wrap in preparation for the plane trip to bali and left it under the tree in the front yard where it usually lives whilst i waited for my lift.

as we drove to the airport i saw one of those signs in the city which have the time and the tempreture showing... it was 42 deg ..!!

got to bali that night and unwrapped the board first thing the next morning and to my horror the deck had delaminated and the creatures grip had shrunk and distorted...

as soon as it gets wet, the delamination sucks back down and you'd never know, but the grip looks a mess and has gone a bit hard.

Been 40 degrees here this last week and so I have moved my 3 boards from the shed to the house......they fit really nicely down the hallway.
Wife and kids are really impressed

Roger, be careful not to freeze your equipment! Better take a leaf out of DeeJays book and move it into the house.

in these temperatures my equipment stays firmly "inside"!!

However, I did take the old Hi Fly shown in this pic:

and removed the daggerboard and the fin and made a Snowboard that takes 4 !!
I will get some pics in the daylight (it was dark when we got it on the snow).
I did try to "paddle" it with a broom handle but could not make it move.
May fix a rig to it if the wind picks up tomorrow.

Gotta watch the old Bubble wrap! Each bubble is like a little magnifying glass wanting to cook your board as quick as it can! [}:)]
