Hi Guys.

Is there a post that gives the basics?

I didn't have much luck when I was paddling in the Ocean a few months ago, out and back from the beach. I could get on the small (600mm) waves about 20m out the beach, but didn't manage further out.

I could be conditions, or just me!!

I'm after information on the best standing position, normal or surf; when to move forwards/backwards on the board etc.

Thanks

The best way is to try and hook up with an experienced downwinder, as this will shorten the long learning curve. There is core group of paddlers in WA now so you should try and go for a paddle with them. Let us know where you are and maybe someone will offer you some help.

Thanks Pete
I'll take a look.

Thanks Mike
At the moment I'm concentrating on surf ski training for the Avon Descent, so SUP has taken a back seat.
However there is a strong Northerly forecast for Saturday and my usual ski training partners are planning a surf ski DW. I thought I might try a river SUP DW as I'm heading that way for a family 'do'.

Hi
Check out www.facebook.com/StandUpPaddleWA

This is the facebook page for SUPWA and people will post downwinder sessions and paddling sessions.

The conditions for downwinding aren't great over winter, but if someone is going out they will post on FB or seabreeze. If you are starting out, try the river first on a 18kt+ day - it is a great way of getting into downwinding and easy to organise.

Come down to a PaddleLoop - the first week of every month at Canning Bridge or check out your local Pod to meet up with other paddlers and learn tips - everyone is very friendly and open.

Cheers

Greg

That's what I was thinking with a 20kt Northerly forecast, starting at the Narrows. I've surf skied that route a number of times, unfortunately not as a DW and believe it's fairly safe.

My plan is family and rain dependent!

Thanks for the SUPWA information. I learned a lot at SUPP BOP training ... and also learned that there is still a lot to learn!

Hey SupNewbe,

I reckon you're spot on for a river run over the next few days. I'll be keen, and it shouldn't be too hard to rustle up a few more starters.
Let's see how this front develops and go from there. Post your interest if anyone else is keen.
