Hey Guys,

Just got a new Naish 14' Glide and keen to do a downwind run ? Looking for a crew to tag along with ?

Happy to travel South or North if need be or ideally if there is a crew over the eastern suburbs way that would be cool. Been Suping in the surf for a while and keen to do some Downies with my u beaut Glide ?

Cheers - Pete

Hi Pete

Congrats on purchasing a DW board and welcome to the addiction of Downwinding, and I am happy to hit some DWers with you, although I don't do that many at the moment due to saturating myself in them all last winter and summer at the expense of family time. Family time is priority now, especially with another kid in the pipeline.

I know the feeling well as it was this same time last year when I made a purchase on my 1st board and also posted the same interest of looking for a crew in the eastern suburbs to guide a newbie in DWing in safety. All you want to do with a new/1st DW board is to see what it's all about and sink your teeth into it. I did not have too much luck either finding people in my area but had warm responses from the crew on the northern beaches, with Sam from Wind Surf and Snow including me in the "Sydney SUP Downwind" Facebook group. These guys seem the most active when it comes to doing DWers in an organised group, and there are also some guys from the deeper south, Sutherland Shire/Cronulla who get out too but do not make it known. I think I posted a run or 2 in my area and managed to meet a guy who lives around the corner from me at Botany.

Obviously Downwinding relies heavily on the weather/wind to line up, and for you to have the time/commitment whens conditions are on. I think sometimes these factors sometimes make it difficult for some people/groups to either commit, or post their DW runs, in this area anyway. In saying that, I still have not done a DW run with any of the experienced crews in Sydney as I thought initially I did not want to be a handbrake/liability for them when conditions are "on" and me being inexperienced.

For me, much has changed since a year ago and while I gave up on the idea of finding people in our area to go with, instead I spent a lot of time by myself on the water in various conditions getting my experience up. I do however encourage and support paddling and DWing with others rather than going solo, especially if people have a lack of general ocean/weather awareness and experience from other water sports.

SOME TIPS FOR WHAT IT'S WORTH THAT HAVE HELPED ME.

1.IF POSSIBLE ALWAYS PADDLE WITH SOMEONE ELSE, however sometimes this is not possible;
2. KNOW THE FORECAST FROM MULTIPLE SOURCES and learn to read the conditions and to constantly re-assess the situation;
3. BE CONSERVATIVE and only put yourself in situations that you know you can handle. Start small in bays and other more enclosed body of waters;
4. HAVE A BACKUP PLAN if things don't work out the way you hoped. e.g. this might be bailing out at Little Bay or Long Bay/Malabar or Coogee in an ocean DW run in the relative safety of calmer waters in the event of a wind change or a serious injury (touch wood).
5. TELL SOMEONE WHERE YOUR GOING and how long you will be and call them when you have arrived back at the car.
6. TAKE NECESSARY EQUIPMENT. If DWing or decent ocean paddling I always take a CO2 inflatable PFD, a phone, water, and a muesli bar.
7. GET FITNESS AND EXPERIENCE by paddling into the wind in increasing wind strengths for periods of time to see what you can handle in the event that you need to self-rescue yourself, or someone else (the misses). This adds piece of mind knowing that you can back yourself if needed. This might mean paddling from Bondi around the headland North into a north east wind for as long as you can, then DWing back to Bondi in relative safety. Malabar is excellent for this in both NE winds and a Southerly. These options are to prepare for a decent DW and are just lead-up sessions to get experience and fitness for the real DWing experience. General paddling in the ocean in calmer wind conditions is also very good around/near the headlands as there is backwash/cross chop that will all condition your body and will build your ability to be able to handle this type of confusing water.
8.THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR TIME ON THE WATER in a variety of conditions depending on your comfort level. Terminate your session when you are feeling a buildup of fatigue that prevents you from being fairly stable on the board, or move to more protected waters.
9. SEEK DJ's ADVICE FOR A MORE EXPERIENCED OPINION as he is the man!!!

We are about to come into some of the best times (for our area) for downwinders on Botany Bay with the consistent Westerly winds, and these are the best way to start out, and are pretty easy logistically and time wise.

Good options include:
Brighton/Kyeemah to La Perouse in a westerly (8kms)
Kurnell to Kyeemah in a southerly (9kms)
La Perouse to Kyeemah in an easterly which are not that common here but when it does come it's normally from a decent low out to sea and is cranking (8kms)
Rosebay to Watsons Bay in a south wester (4-5km)

Good Ocean DWer options that I have experienced in order of best experiences include:
Maroubra to Bondi in a southerly with a decent south swell (9-10km)
La Perouse to Cronulla in a northerly then back again on a decent southerly wind change (20km)
Malabar to La Perouse in a noreaster (8-9km)
La Perouse to Maroubra in a southerly (not recommended)

Other options that I have not tried yet but seem good are:
Bondi to Watsons Bay in a southerly
Bondi to Maroubra or Coogee in a noreaster

Hit me up, and I'm sure you'll get more advice from others who know more.

cheers

Potty

Hey Pete, keep your eye on Seabreeze for downwind races over Spring/Summer on the northern beaches. That is the best way to meet crew and organise DW paddling buddies. Good winds don't really start until October so maybe just venture over to Jamieson Park on Sundays, 8am, for time trails to get your fitness up. Cheers Dave

You might also consider heading to Rose Bay OzSup for some racing fitness, there are a few mad eastern suburbs types who'd probably be keen for the odd DWinder or 2

+1 for OZ SUP. There are definitely a few starting some DWing. The same guys that race there on Saturday 8am, go up to JPP on Sunday as well.

For some intro courses, can I add:

- Bayview Park to Palm Beach (or reverse) - works best if you have the wind and tide with you
- Kirribilli to Manly - the B2B course prep - 4 hour parking and a ramp at Milsons Park. Again best if you have the tide with you.
- 2-3km into the wind out of Fishermans Beach Collaroy and turn and DW back. I did this solo a few times demo'ing at WSS and it was fun.
- I've even unloaded at the Lane Cove weir to do a long SE -> E run on a Westerly wind and tide on a big day. But stop before you get to Blues Point as the waves come straight back at you there.

My oc club came up with a handy acronym, PWEP, to cover those things that PottyMullet talked about:
- People
- Weather
- Equipment
- Plan

Happy downwinding. If I wasn't moving to WA on Monday, I'd join you.

Hey Pete, I'm also in the east and up for a few downwinders....I've been doing the same paddles on my own between Bondi, Coogee & Maroubra. I'm keen to hook up with someone to paddle with.

This Saturday could be OK for downwinder somewhere...there is plenty of breeze forecast. it might need a little more south in it but poentially Botany Bay (Dolls Point to Kymeagh) or even somewhere up in Pittwater.

In less than 24hrs and looks like we have enough of a crew. I'm keen for a Bondi to Watsons Bay in a southerly with fish and chips, and beers at the end.

I'm out this weekend with sickness but tomorrow looks epic for a Botany Bay run from Taren Point or Dolls Point to Port Botany Boat ramp.

Just a thought for the future, and let me know what you think, but car drops can be time consuming so what about one of us sacrifices a run to be the designated driver which could mean one run only and everyone else shouts the driver a meal at the end, or do 2 runs and designated drivers swap out.

Let me know what you think guys

Potty

.....hang on, that means that I am available to be the driver tomorrow if anyone is interested. I can drop you in the ZONE!!!

There is a crew meeting at the Cooks River Boat Ramp Botany Bay tomorrow at 0630 for a 10km downwind.

All are welcome.

Hey Mr Mullet, can you recommend a CO2 PFD? Are these acceptable in races or do they make you wear a PFD that is always buoyant? If you fall and injury or illness prevents you from manually inflating, it's not much use. However the chances of that happening are very remote I would say.

Good advice on the headland wash. One of the first times I paddled out into the wild blue yonder was on a very small swell in light winds at my local. Once I turned left, headed up the coast and got in front of the cliff line between two beaches the side swells coming from both port and starboard made it a nightmare to stay upright. It really surprised me how difficult it made things even in such benign conditions.

No CO2 inflatable PFDs. In NSW all of the races that require PFDs require the PFD2s. In Qld the inflatable waist PFDs are Ok. The Qlds who came down for the NSW Titles were able to use the waist inflatables this year but apparantly next year they wont be able to race with them.

Pete, the real go is like Pete Morgan said above, if you are on Facebook then join up to the group above. We will attempt to post more about local runs in the near future.

I'm no expert on PFD's but bought an "Ultra" CO2 one to satisfy the misses concerns about me doing solo ocean runs as she nearly banned me from going out after coming home from my first big one looking a little battered and bruised.

You make a good point about being knocked out, and take NNSUP's advice regarding type of PFD for racing as he is well in the loop.

I did not paddle today but shuttled a few of the guys around in the car for 2 Botany Bay runs. From their accounts and looking at the conditions it was fun and good to get on the water, but far from the predicted "EPIC" conditions. Looks like this weather system blew itself out down the south coast and has lost steam.

Another smaller crew were also present on the bay today, and according to the other fellas who knew these guys, these guys were training for Molokai and had a decent support boat doing multiple shuttles back across the bay.

SUPLOVE, was there enough wind for your challenge? (Bonnet Bay to La Pa)

Ended up Woronora to LaPerouse. Some good bump running. After doing "Two Oceans" with SupEplore I now paddle with a PLB in a Zhik belt bag, skeletool leatherman im the pouch on the belt and a marine VHF. I also use a garmin marine GPS. Great to have and especially for the solo.

haha we did 3hours 10minutes and it was 22km at a leisurely pace. We let it all out last weekemd Cronulla to Rose bay (42km and 8hours) and so did not feel like pushing things today. Our race is in July 28th.

Nice work!

If you ever needed any company to break up your pain on those big ocean runs, post them on Sydney SUP DW Facebook and some of us might be interested in keeping you company along some part of the coast. We could bring a thermos of tea out and a few scotch finger biccies for you and your crew, like a floating morning or afternoon tea.

Good luck with your mission.
