Myself and Stimo where only talking about this as we drove from Swannie back to Port Beach to pick up his vehicle after a DW run on Monday. 'How much would you pay' was one of the questions we posed. $10 would be great value based on our conversation.

Hi Stimo
We only had our first run last night. We both caught the MTbike bug all winter. Big red has been put
back together and it was its first run since the snapping

Those skis are pretty narrow, I wonder how many SUPs he could fit on the trailer?

Such a good idea and will definitely make DW'ing a lot easier. He might even need to start an extra service for SUPs only I think he will be that in demand. Alternatively I'm sure if we supplied my wife with a bottle of wine for every shuttle she drove we be good all season!

Would love something like this on the goldy. I think the biggest thing that stops people from getting into downwinding is having someone to go with

With Downwind Paddling you're on your own anyway. You may all start together but within 2 minutes everybody is scattered all over the ocean. If anything does go wrong make shore you're at the front of the pack if you're at the back of the pack nobody's going to know until it's too late.

Such a great Idea "STOKED FOR YA's" but how long is the Downwind window in WA. Like good friend Kelly Moore on Maui does the Maliko Shuttle Bus Run that can take 12 people at $15 per head but Kelly really only has a 12 week window for maliko and she need 4 or more paddlers to make it viable.

Dean Gardner just called me. He is thinking of starting a shuttle service on the Northern Beaches for our nice little 12k run between Avalon and Firshermans - for skis and SUPs. The bug is catching -

Hey Kissa and you east coast guys. Don't wait until January to sample the best downwinder conditions in Australia. The King of the Cut is on the 8th of December - reliable Seabreeze conditions in December, 20km of the best runners in the state. Beau O'Brien has confirmed he is coming, Terrene Black, Dale Chapman and possibly an international level champion is rumored to be very keen.
$3000 worth of prize money. More details coming soon, this is going to be huge!

I have a much better solution that will cost fractions of $10 per paddler and be much more efficient than trying to book and wait around for a shuttle bus.
Plan is to discuss it amongst Freshy Pod crew...
Not going to give away the IP here just yet...

I thought that's what you normally sh!t Hilly??
If we can sort out something we'll let everyone know the setup and each regular group might be able to replicate/improve to some degree...
Does require some infrastructure too...
Just want to float the balloon first before launching on SB...
Lots of ack ack artillery ready on SB...
Have a good one tomorrow mate!!

I also wish this service was available, on the sunshine coast!
I have even been thinking about doing it myself? But don't think it would really be profitable. Due to not enough people round here who'd use it?
Then what you'd have to charge to make a profit? And so on.......

Probably better for a sup shop, who already has the suitable vehicle look at scheduling potential DW runs a week in advance, posting that schedule on their web site and seabreeze. They could then start to take bookings. All runs to be confirmed within 24 hours or so to be sure weather conditions will suit. Everyone meets at the designated DW finish point for pick up.

This service provided by a sup shop would be no doubt provide a further boost to their sales, one would expect.

As always there are other issues when it comes to this stuff, just a few things i can think of of the top of my head are.

1: you would need a permit or licence to carry passengers in your van.

2: You car or van would need to be certified?

3:Insurance for carrying passengers and for if anything happens to them on the downwind run, duty of care kind of thing i guess?

Not 100% sure on some of that stuff but it's never just as easy as grabbing a car and starting a business, as soon as money gets involed then so does a whole lot of other fun ****. could see it working in WA as they have pretty good wind but on the East coast we are not quite that lucky so really you might get to work 30 to 50 days a year!! and for $10 a person i cant see a huge profit coming anytime soon!!
Yes i thought about it and even have all the gear to do it but our wind is just so unreliable it would be so hard!!

Great to hear your comments guys. I will try to answer a few queries...$10 is the price per trip but anything longer than about 20km prepare for $15; I can take 11 SUP boards maybe 12 but I can only take 10 passengers; getting a group together and texting me is best or just go off my facebook post for pick up times and locations; there will be odd days with joy winds when I wont be going due to my other work commitments; as most of u know if u are worried about safety and being left behind when doing a downwinder just have a predetermined regrouping point then carry on; I will drop you off wherever you want and you dont all have to get off at the same spot; Paul J. was wondering about legalities, I have an omnibus licence under the category Tourism Charter (hence TC number plates), I have insurance for public liabilty, the vehicle and all your gear that I am carrying;so I am licensed and available to do all sorts of small group charters not only downwinders; and no Twimby I am not 6'4 Im only 6'3. Anyway the best way to check it out is jump on one day and see what u reckon. Ive been downwind paddling for 15 years and just want to make it fun, easy, and save u a **** load of time while i make a few bucks to pay for new gear and traffic infringements from all the fkn driving.
Cheers, Todd

Cheers for clearing some of that up, I was not trying to put a damper on the whole DW idea for people but just trying to point out it's not always as easy as it seems!! Stoked you guys in WA have this going and if anywhere in Aus is set up for this then WA is it. Sounds nice and cheap also for WA as i heard a coffee cost $10!!
