I’m looking at getting myself a down winder for when summer strikes. Looking at the Surftech 14' x 30 5/8" x 5 1/4" Laid Coastrunner or the Naish 14'. I don’t think that the coast runner has enough rocker in it to be able to be used as a down winder. Can anyone recommend a good down winder? Any comments will be muchly appreciated.

The Laird is not a real DW board.

Get yourself an AST 14' Glide and you can't go wrong.. I think it's cheaper than the big Laird.

They have lots'a rocker and you need every bit of it.

Without going 'custom' there are not many real DW boards out there.

For a down winder, yes the Naish 14' Glide is a very good choice of the production options. The Coreban 14' seems to be a bit of a cross over between flat water and down wind. ???

A little more expensive are DC's

More expensive again are S.I.C. from Maui.

Sounds like you are a lightweight !! You may never require an upgrade to a 16 footer ... ?? "Downwinder" (the forum person) might have more thoughts ???

Try the Lahui Kai's as well, I love my 12'6 in all types of conditions. James 'Billy' Watson rides a 16 footer and they also make a 14 footer, both great boards as well! www.lahuikai.com

Simondo has a good list going, for shapes I'd add:

Joe Bark Paddleboards - www.joebark.com/boards - Not sure how easy/expensive it is to get his 14' over here, it's a nice looking board though.
Deep Surfboards QL - the new 14' they did looks nice
Paddle Surf Hawaii have a 14' from the sound of it - not sure when it hits our shores

Most people, shapers and shops are willing to let you have a go on their boards I'd try a displacement and a "surf" style (flat bottom) board to see if you like one over the other.

One thing I had a hard time deciding on is Custom v Production. Other than price production is nice because you can pretty much walk out with a board. The nice thing about a custom is you can tweak it to incorperate things you'd like to have and to suit your body type if you don't quite fit the "average", the down side is it can be between 3-5 weeks to get a board depending on where you live in respect to the shaper.

I sold my 12 and 14' Naish Glides to get the 14' Joe Bark and 14' Coastrunner.

I've since sold the two Surftech's (via 'breeze forums) and am back on the 14' Glide.

I'm back on the 14' Naish Glide which IMO is a much better option. The Laird Coastrunner is a great board for the river or Bay, very big and lots of speed BUT with zero rocker and such a wide nose, no way I'd take it outside for a true run on the open ocean, it'd bounce and pearl the whole way.

The Bark was disappointing. It's very much an oversized surfboard with the template it has and nothing on the 14' Glide.

Just my opinion. I'd go a Glide for sure - size up to you.

Lahui Kai boards hardly get a mention on here , but they seem to be right up their , Billy Watson pretty much smashed every body on his today and prettty much every other race he enters , probably more to do with him than the board though.

But are they genuine downwind boards or race boards?

The joy of getting a custom board - do you want a DW or a Race board? or like me something in between.
