One of our group had a tiger shark latch on to his board today.

Ben Tardew has moved from WA to the Goldy. So beware off Currumbin.
Shark bit into fin and rear of board. ben beat it off and rafted up with another paddler Andy kerr till it left them alone.
From all reports a scary time....

Yep scary stuff. We went from Snapper to Nobby's. I was a fair way behind the guys by the time they reached Currumbin, so didn't see it myself, but very happy a couple of the boys waited for me to catch up once they fought it off so I wasn't behind on my own for the last 8km. Glad I was with a group today, but don't think I'll be doing another solo run for a little while.

I remember when we had all the attacks and sightings over here Ash wouldn't let him do solo runs without following Ben along the shore. Now that it has actually happened she is sure to not let him out of her sight, on the upside you guys will always have someone to shuttle you.

but yes scary.

Gotta keep it in perspective.

How many people in the water?

How many sharks?

How long since last person was interfered with by a shark at this beach?

What are the odds?

KEEP CALM AND KEEP SURFING.

** scary stuff
Always in back of ya mind when downwinding
Only really small number of people paddling out that far regularly, which is not really good odds for those few is it ?
Least it wasn't that Big White from Byron least week!

Ben just told me the story... He is now the safest guy in QLD.. The odds must be extremely low to have that kind of experience twice.

How did he manage not to fall in the drink while a shark was chewing on his board?

well at least they know Im not full of ****….

Manoman did not say ANYTHING negative towards Pete's first post or any of the others, just gave a little different perspective to the event. Yet in true SB fashion someone took to red thumbing which is just SOFT!

Now the circle jerk gang is thumbing away which is EXACTLY to be expected.

odds yes, statistics no. Thats the beauty of Maths, it can be manipulated to suit any outcome. If I was in His shoes, id be telling myself It couldn't possibly happen again

i spoke to ben today. he's done lots of dw ers solo.

i do lots solo too. all mine solo runs involve currumbin.

whats crazy is you know there practically no chance of that happening to ben again or anyone else in the same area

yet i was very easily able to convince myself the conditions were very ordinary today- not worth it

Hey folks,
I am the lucky / unlucky paddler.
It happened off currumbin on a pretty wide line, I saw the shark swim past and thought cool shark, then a few seconds later he bit or rammed my fin and I managed to land on my board. Then I turned around to see him coming again so I just splashed the top of the water, after a few more approaches I started stabbing it with my blade, it was like hitting a rock!! I was impressed with the strength of my fanatic paddle I did manage to break the handle off but just re glued it. This went on for about 5-10 minutes, it must of charged me 20 times and I hit it really hard about 10 times, it never latched onto my board, then Andrew Kerr was coming past out wide and I yelled out to him, he and Karla came straight to me as fast as they could and Andrew rafted up next to me then it just tailed us for a while longer and finally left us! I'm stoked I was with a group and they charged in without considering there safety. Thanks for all the concern from the sup community, have had a few visits and calls today. Board is fixed and ready to go. Sat is looking good lets get 50 people together and go for it hopefully that's the last time I have to tell the story!!!!
Ben
P.s i dunno what type of shark it was, but was thinking it was a bull from how insane it was

So glad to hear you are OK, and great respect to Andrew and Karla for charging in to assist.
Rumour has it your paddling pretty well so I'm surprised it could keep up with you!!

at any point did you have visions of Roy Scheider looking back at you saying I think we need a bigger boat!

Seriously thats a bloody good effort to remain calm and do what you did.

Good point. Lot's of potential dangers at Currumbin with the boats crossing the bar and the sheer number of people in the water but sharks are waaay down the list.

Glad to hear you survived, what must have been a terrifying experience.

How fantastic that two other paddlers came to your assistance and helped you out. This shows how solid the human and paddling bond is.

You will no doubt continue to do dw's but maybe you will have a little niggle in the back of your mind for a long time to come.

I hope the niggle doesn't affect your paddling.

ET.

They are a sponsor in the SB room but Dave is a member on these forums (Katana). Check out his page www.surfsafe.com.au or even just check it out in the SB room. Heaps of stuff there.

I was chatting with Dave yesterday and he said he has had a bit of interest from Gold coast so he may be able to point you to someone who is fitting them or looking to

The idea of wearing a divers knife in a pouch strapped to your leg on ocean DWers makes sense, you never know.
Be great if you could transfer it to the end of your paddle if need be
