Good question!!!but i think they made the right call as to change the set up at the last min would have been a nightmare!! nearly everyone i spoke to at the end of the race were fine with the way it was run and everyone had a nice smile and glad they did it.
I thought it was a good race and i liked the way it stayed nice and close between the top 6 and where any little mistake and anything could have happened!! it was great to see so many stoked people hanging out afterwards..

i don't think much would have been gained changing the direction.
you would have been paddling into the main swell.
six of one, half a dozen of the other.
surfing qld give the race the best chance possible by holding it at this time of year.
one other thing,it's hard to paddle up wind on a sup, but prone paddlers, oc's and skis aren't keen on it either.
my only oc1 race was up wind and when we finished everyone was saying one day we will get a dw race, so it just not isolated to sup events
