I'm flying to Brisbane to pick up a new car and will be driving back to Melbourne over 3 days.

That means 7+ hours of driving per day with 2 night stops along the way. I should get a couple
hours in the water each day.

- Any advice on where to stop for accom that will mean better chance of waves?
(will be hunting lefts if possible or good long rights)

- Anyone keen to get some waves?

I was thinking first night somewhere between Port Macquarie and Newcastle and then somewhere
south of Sydney on the 2nd night.

Any help would be appreciated!

i would suggest do all your surfing nth of sydney and then bee line it to melbourne to make the most of your trip. so any where between surfers and newcastle you should find spots. once past sydney its a long way to melbourne along the coast and you would be doing more driving than surfing.
so id be checking the wind and your maps- local tourist offfices have great free maps and try and you will have a ball.

Stop for a session at Byron or Lennox but don't stay there. If theres swell about, have a look at Arrawarra on the way thru but stop for a night at Crescent Head for sure.

Skip Port Mac but you could check Bonny Hills / North Haven on the way thru. Get a pie at North Haven......amazing !

I'd then head straight to Sydney and go to Cronulla for a night. From Cronulla you have mega choice on my doorstep and The Coal Coast is also only 40 mins drive from Cronulla.

I agree, head straight to Vicco from Bulli but that allows a stop at Sandon Point first, big session around Sandon / Thirroul area then straight out Picton Road to the Hume Hwy for a straight 10 hour run home.

Best road trip in the world IMO. Enjoy !

Yes, surf north of Sydney, then Bee Line on the Hume. Hume is a pretty easy drive these days, with all the upgrades, and newish Albury by-pass speeds the trip up by another 30 minutes....

First surf for me depending on the conditions would be somewhere between Tallows and sth wall ballina. followed by a drive to maybe nambucca or a bit sth , maybe sneek in a late arvo sess depending on the time.
Next day maybe cruise to hawks nest or there abouts. options on the way everywhere, this is a great piece of coastline,
- make sure you put a NSW state of origin jumper up above the back seat
If you go the coast road below Sydney Ulladulla,Broulee and tarthra all worth a look.
YEow have fun

Surf Animals has nailed the answer but it will depend on the prevailing conditions at the time. Also what boards will you have, shortboards or sups?

Brisbane to Byron/Lennox for a surf depending on the winds, this coast likes a southerly and not a northerly. Head off to Coffs for a late or stay around kempsey or Crescent for the night

If you take Surf Animals advice and stay in Cronulla let me know

The South coast is full of waves but a fair bit of driving and checking, so with a 2 night stay I reckon Kempsey and then Sydney via Sandon Point then bolt straight to Vic via the Hume

Yes, South Coast of NSW warrants a separate trip (from Vic). 10+ days. So many waves there!

Treachery ! This place can have lefts running down the whole beach for goofy footer like you. That is under an E or NE Swell. Pics up anything from the South.

Potential to set off for The Hume from here.

Thanks mate.

I've done the trip at least 100 times and wasted many hours exploring.

2 nights equals Cres'n'ed / Nulla then home for sure in my books on bigger boards.

Thanks everyone for the tips!

I've done a lot of surfing north of Angourie and south from Ulladulla but in
between the two I haven't surfed much (besides the northern beaches).

So I'm thinking:
- fly in, pick up car
- head to Byron talos area for a quicky (or maybe Lennox depending on swell, or nth wall Ballina)
- then off to Angourie for another quicky
- drive to crescent and stay night
- early surf at crescent
- drive south for a lunchtime surf??? Anywhere good further south than Bonny Hills/Nth Haven or are these spots worth the stop?
- Punch it all the way through to Goulburn or maybe Cronulla
- Head home

Thanks again!

Around Taree its Oldbar and Saltwater Point but thats about it unless you want to waste time

Both these are close to the freeway can get good and they would be my last stop apart from Sandon Point south of Sydney
