Hi,

I'm heading to Fiji in a couple of weeks and want to take my SUP. I'm flying with Fiji Airways.

Their website says that bulky luggage over 277cm total dimension (LxWxD) has to be shipped as freight. My board in the bag is 245x70x10 which equals 325cm.

Now I don't want to have a shocker when I get to the airport at 5am with cranky kids and an even crankier wife. If they say refuse the board I'm screwed.

Does anyone else have any experience with Fiji Airways and traveling with a SUP?

Any advice? Tips? Recommendations?

Cheers

I fly with my 8-6 to Fiji all the time on Fiji Air. They have changed their policies. You have pay excess weight and size on your board and they are incredible strict on carry on as well , they will measure it weigh it and tag it. I don't fly with them anymore to hard and expensive within camera gear and board. Virgin are way more lenient and works out cheaper due to all your excess chargers from Fiji Air.

Just make sure you put your paddle inside the board bag with your clothes . Don't have and extra bag.Your carry on bag must fit inside their metal frame and be under 7kg , if it's not they will make you check it in and charge you for an extra bag.

Thanks for the reply mate.

When was the last time you flew with Fiji Airways with your board?

I want to take it with me soooo bad but it's just not worth the hassle if they decide it's too big.

A mate took his a few weeks ago, fine flying out of Sydney but they kicked up a stink on the way back......

Real world problems......

Fly there with an 8-6 rods and paddle all in the one board bag with clothes in my carry on
Weight came in just under

Got charged an extra $50

As long as your under 9 ft you should be ok

Youll just have to pay excess

Thanks for the reply Dogman.

When did you fly? What you took (according to their website) should've been rejected at check-in??!!??

Did they even bat an eyelid?

I just don't know whether to risk it or not.....

Dogman and I flew back about about 3 months ago (I flew back early) , he flew over on Virgin back on Fiji Air . They are a bit more relaxed in Fiji but brutal on the Aussie departure. Cost me $350 extra both ways as I had multiple bags. As Rog says just use one big bag to keep cost down. 2.7m is you max length keep it under that and you should be fine. You will be fine on weight just keep the kids luggage to 10kg a piece. They add up the whole family so you are good for 20kg each.

They have never measured the cubic don't where that came from.

Then with the ten dollars you save at counter you can bribe some poor kid on a pushie to get swopped by a maggie
