Having a quiet Little surf to myself North of Narrowneck yesterday morning
thinking about the unfortunate events over in WA and how it had been ages since Ive seen a shark up close on the Goldie when out of the corner of my eye something pointy shaped sliced past my board made a big splash and dissappearded into the depths. I tried to follow the dark shape for a moment then decided it wasnt probably too smart a move so settled back into riding a few more waves, constantly looking around just in case and being super conservative when up and riding. The water was a bit murky and it was a fair sized shape so I convinced myself it must of been a small to medium shark and jokingly pondered adding a couple more feet to it to give the Bulletin a headline. Was out for about an hour when a bigger than average set came in and as I scratched to get out the back and approached the first wave this beautiful big Manta Ray was sailing down it chasing some baitfish. It scared the crappers out of me at first until I realized what it was and then settled back and just watched it cruise around before it bailed again. Made an average surf an above average experience. Hope the thing doesnt get caught on those stinking nets.
