Hi crew - ride my 9'8" starboard fish with a 5.6m sail in small waves when 10-15knts cross off wind {last night because I forgot my paddle). Sails wave OK but tends to slide sideways in gusts if you try and get planing.

Does anyone have any experience with using different fin set ups currently stock 20cm Drake and M5 (i think ) side fins is going bigger on the centre fin worth while (23cm centre) and going smaller on the FCS fins.

Cheers

I think most stock SUP boards will suffer with the load put on them when windsurfing.. and especially going upwind.

I would try a bigger center fin.. I'm guessing at least a 9" deep fin.

Yeah - they do say they are not designed to plane but slide badly when loaded in a gust

Will try a 23cm MFC wave fin and see if its any better.

I purchased a 9'8'' SB Extremist a couple of years ago in the hope it would double as a fun planing sailboard in higher winds. (it came with footstraps and had seen photos which indicated reasonable planing speeds)

I too, however, found it has considerable lateral slippage when loaded up with a sail. Mine came with a Drake 23cm. I have tried a number of fins including a Select 32cm ProAm (which was the largest/most upright A-base fin I could find) but cannot get close to sailboard-level planing ability from the board, although it didn't slip or spin-out with the larger fin. My weight at 100kgs may have had an affect also.

As said previously the board's rocker and shape are definitely skewed to the surfing end of the spectrum rather than the planing end, so would probably surf (sail) well in non-planing conditions - but that's when it's SUP time!

I had also tried a MFC Freewave 27cm and this was OK in terms of slide and spin-out.

Just an update on the 9'8" fish

Popped the 20cm fin to the back of the box and let the board head down wind and load up the mast base as much as possible and it planes (6.4 in gusty 15 knt wind) at sellicks beach cross off and it planes quite well - not exactly high speed - except when you point down wind and catch a wave (and dodge the pissed bogans in the shore break for Australia day - I have never before seen 3 or more kilometres of cars parked on a beach door to door and 2-3 deep)

surprised at how much fun it was to windsurf when the wind isn't enough for small boards but a pain for SUPng

a 26cm or so fin would definitely be worth a try

try using a 5.0 sail. i found it more fun with a smaller sail with the stock fins. just uphaul in the break if its not windy enough to waterstart.

I agree Bertie - I just rigged a 6.4 S2 cause there was almost enough for my free wave - could get planing but too gusty with huge glassy holes - so stuck the SUP on instead

I have had the S1 2010 5.6 on it in waves and its heaps of fun but likes to spin out a bit on bottom turns if you push it hard - such a wide tail I think.
