My mate owns a 12 foot Ron and being a big board,IMHO I don't see a reason to change down in size! 10 inch is a good match! maybe 9 inch but that would be it!
Keep in mind, its super hard to bounce one off the lip, unless your charging pipe [}:)]

Hey There,

I experimented with the 12'2 x 31 x 41/4 Laird which is also a Ron House Design,

In conjuction with Dave Boyd of Imperial Surf Boards we tired lots of fins.

The one I liked the most was a 8 1/2 cut away which made the board for its size able to pivot remarkably off the tail.

I agree that if you want to throw the board around your going to need a big open face but it really can be done!

On the theme has anyone found a good setup for a 09 9 8 Starboard?

I tried larger side fins (same as my ripper) but it rides like a pig, really slow like there is heaps of tow in on the fins. Feels like you are dragging seaweed on the waves. When I put the same set up in the 9 6 ripper it works really well, fast and loose.

Keep going back to the stock single fin with small sides seems to work best, I might have to try one like yours Phill.

That's what I use in the Ripper and it works a treat but in the starboard it feels horrible.

david from greenline reckons a raker fin is needed in the 12 foot ron house boards, makes the board pivot. fatter fin don't allow it do this

For once I am with mac on this one. 9 inch would be the smallest you would ever want to go with a 12ft board IMO and any decent fibreglass dolphin fin or similar shape will work just fine. Longer sups are just like mals in that most of the turning ability of the board is the rider and not the fin. Yeah yeah I know that fins can make the board looser or tighter or more pivoty etc but all boards will turn with whatever fin you put in them. I have actually been riding a 12ft board in recent weeks and it is best with a 9 to 10 inch fin. It paddles great and surfs well down the line and holds on the face nice and it TURNS no problem. I believe the secret with bigger sups is to put the best fin in it that you can afford (whether that be $50 or $150) put it somewhere near half way in the box and go surfing and forget about the fin forever. Simple but effective. These are only my personal opinions though.

I believe that if you're going to fork out $1500-1900 on a sup, then it should come with quality fins. Sure, lots of surfers will always want to experiment, but I'm with Billboard: if you have a great fin(s) "go surfing and forget about the fin forever".
A couple of my sup acquaintances told me that the particular make of sup they had bought recently (for just under 2 grand!) came with "crap" fins, so they bought new ones
Fins are expensive. I ripped out the 13" dolphin fin on my first sup (JL 11'); often surf over shallow reefs, so replaced it with one 3 inches shorter. Better fin than the big ol' dolphin fin, definitely.

Hilly, sorry, can't comment on the fins for the 9'8", I'm sticking with the stock ones. Trying hard not to have to replace 'em . Besides, can't afford it
