I’ve heard and read a bit about fins on this form of late.
Not coming from a surfing background I must admit I don’t know one fin from another.
At what point do you consider the fins are not up to scratch and affecting your ride?

I’m quite happy with my stick but if different fins help then I’m keen to give them ago.

My stick is a 9’ 8” starboard and ride mainly knee to head high slowish waves.
I’m not an aggressive rider and standard fins have never let go on me, so me thinks they are all right.

What do ya reckon will new fins give me a better ride?

Ian

Hi Ian
Try to borrow fins to try out. I would suspect the design team at Starboard have given you the best fins for your board.
I'm still fascinated by that avatar of yours. Do you use it on that other forum???[}:)]

For the purpose of training and self-education try moving your existing fins around and see if you can tell the difference.

ie. Move the centre fin forward/back middle and add/remove the side fins. Perhaps even put the side fins in the wrong side to see how it feels.

I once did a series of back to back tests between a bunch of fins and there were distinct differences between them. This was for flat water paddling so it was easier to get similar conditions to test in.

It's kind of fun playing test pilot and whipping fins in and out. It's even more fun when you can tell the difference.

I use the TC redline fins...I find the give alot more drive and I can generate more speed out of turns with these compared to the plastic fins. They are alot stiffer and do not flex as much....pretty much all the glass fins(occy's sunny's) are the same...The TC's have a wider base and are not as long giving me more speed in and a quicker release at the point of turn....I reckon they generate approx 20% more speed........

What fin system do you have? Future fins or FCS. Is your board a 2+1 or a quad?
