watched this guy carving it up on the points at noosa with this weird style

he was getting hell pits and sliding all over the joint

he kept paddling past me and i would give him the nod of approval and a short w@nk r@ve on his performance on the last wave that he had rode past me on

over the next week the w@nk r@ves became like an annual business meeting in which we would talk about world politics and the waves we had scored since or last meeting

our meetings became some of my highlights of the day and it was not until have our usual spa de breifing of the days events that someone mentioned the dude on the finless board getting the waves of the day

i said yer thats my new philosophy buddy

mate watching him is a real buzz

check rasta out riding through the comp site he is nuts too

Has the film been speeded up? He seems to be generating a lot of speed. Maybe thats because he doesn't have any drag from fins. Looks really cool. The strength in his legs to hold that low centre of gravity position is amazing. What a dude

Nope its not speeded up...he's doing it with one eye as well...try that it ****s your depth perception like you would not believe

Notice how far forward he is on the board.. They've gotta be soft and sucky rails to help him hold the rail and yet he has so much speed.. Also there maybe a bit of belly in the bottom of the board to help to stop catching a rail.. Pushing through the bottom turns has gotta be tricky.. .. I could watch that all day.. How cool would it be to watch a surf film with live music like that.

Genius comes in many shapes and forms... and as a mere mortal always leaves me awestruck.

Ditto Simondo,next time you see him ask him to show you his impersonations of the top surfers.It's just amazingly funny.Yes he does move to a different beat,or as someone who will remain nameless said, the guys wired to the bloody moon, but you know he's been doing his thing since the 80's,just like Rasta does now, and as you can see is a very talented surfer on any equipment.

I've seen Derek with my own eyes at Avalon NSW, and Bells Vic, on finless boards. I always point him out to others.... "Look, there goes Derek again".... The common answer, "what, how do you know... Derek who...".... My reply, "well that board clearly has no fins, see how he's riding it,... and there's only 1 person I know that is that good on a fin less board..."... I've even had a further response, "how do you know it has no fins...".... The conversation ends there.... it's so obvious the board has no fins....

i watch a doco on telly some time ago. he was good then, but is absolutely going nuts on that footage. i don't think too many other people in the world could do it at that level

We were lucky enough to surf with both Derek Hynd on his finless board as well as Rasta on his Alaia at the Noosa festival. There was also an exhibition session of a whole group Alaia riders at the festival. Really inspiring stuff.

Rasta visits DH in South America in the surf movie "Blue Horizon". In the movie are great clips of DH as well as all of the interesting boards he rides. Its well worth seeing. I think the movie "Litmus" also has some great footage of DH. He is a pleasure to watch no matter what he is riding - truly a living legend.

So, the question we should be asking is when are we going to see someone have a go on a finless SUP?

Had a chat with Derek out at Noosa a few months ago. His fish he has made by Jed from Bushrat Surfboards and Jed has made me a couple of boards as well.

Tried to get him to have a go on my SUP but he said it’s a no no for him, think he was sort of keen, but was worried he would never live it down.

Wanted to know if I got bored paddling around with my feet always in the same position?

Any way was very chatty, called me into a few set waves which he was already on which we shared. I must have looked a total dick though for dropping in on a “legend” at a very busy Noosa. But he called me and was hooting and giggling behind me as we shared, The finless board he was on was quick

He surfs well and the first time I saw those finless efforts of DH on youtube I was freaking out. I then saw him in real life on a finless board and really freaked out. He rips.

However, for me he will always be the man who made me appreciate the finner things in life with his words. Here is a sample of his work that just sums him up perfectly. A legend. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did the first time I read it.........and the 20 other times!!!!! I would love to be able to write like this.

Ripping Yarns, Story Ten, by Derek Hynd.

Dane was the farthest outside when the horizon heaved. He was a good ten strokes away. Nick Carroll hadn't even seen it - he'd just scratched and missed a small twelve footer in the howling offshore. And Gabe Callaghan - Gabe was underneath Nick in the impact zone after a bad nose dive.

Dane yelled to me, he yelled to Nick, he yelled to Gabe, "OUTSIDE!" and forged his Aipa gun out to sea as a sickening set loomed darker and darker in the sky.

The THINGS were still thirty seconds off us but were going to throw beyond the normal line. It was obvious. I glanced back at Nick in a whirling scramble to catch me. Poor Gabe was only where his opponent had been an age ago and was paddling sideways for Winkipop. Gabe was going to die.

Dane was now lurching for the horizon and the fear in him was doubled in me and tripled in Nick and Gabe...he was as good as in hell - behind in the heat, behind in the paddle.

Dane's red board had the look of a bloody spear as I yearned to be up with him. Nick was now angling for Winki. Like Gabe.

The first wave looked big enough to close out Sunset as Dane started hurling himself up the face, it's rogue chest already feathering in the twenty knot north wind. Dane was in mid-air over the lip and four ceilings above me as I dipped into it's pit. My nose would punch through. I knew.

As the beast pitched two seconds later and the ocean contorted my face like never before, Nick was well behind me. Gabe.

In a mass of windspray Nick burst through the lip to the side and kept squirming to avoid the monstrous suckback. Seconds passed. So big was the wave that the Bells clifftop was still obscured.

It had passed over Gabe, the biggest thing that I'd ever seen, and had obliterated him like a heel does an ant. He'd been down for maybe fifteen seconds when the windspray died away and the cliff came into view.

But why did so many of the distant specks have their arms raised?...GABE WAS ON THAT WAVE, and the wind carried the crowd's mighty roar.
