I was out the back of the shop the other day fixing up my 14' when a couple of young mates called in to let me know how pissed off and bored they were with the onshore winds and no waves. So I started wanking on about how good downwinding is and the next thing I know they want to have a crack and are not taking no for an answer.
So I thought fine I'm up for a laugh there was a 2 ' swell 15 knot ne wind we could do a short run back to the shop.Instead of using downwind boards we went on Naish Manas .
We had so much fun, after the boys got tired of falling of the back front and side of the boards they got there sea legs very quick and after a few tips we were all getting some fun short runs.
These guys had never been in the ocean on a sup before.I had so much fun the next time the wind comes up Its going to be hard to decide what board I take.

Nice Noel. If you have an 11'4 Nalu, try that downwind in short period stuff - it is a treat

I just posted a question about this on the standup zone.

my spot has short period groundswell under wind chop. I'm on the west coast of Sweden in a big bay, my guess is that it's more like the great lakes, but have never been on th GLs.

I was out with my 7 year old in 15 knots and we had some short period 2 foot ground swell under wind chop. I was on Fanatic AW 9-2 and boy on 9-0 Naish kid board. I was concentrating on keeping track of the boy who was struggling a bit in the chop ( should have put him on aw and me on 12-6 Bark , like last time. ) I noticed the AW was a lot of fun and would plane on the swell. it seemed much better and more fun than the Bark in these conditions

I'm not very experienced, but it has made me think that perhaps a shorter 10-6 or 11-4 traditional longboard ( like a Nalu) is a better DW board for my conditions.

as soon as I have conditions and time I'm going to do a back to back DW on bark and aw to compare.
looking to get another board for wife, and was thinking of a 14' for me and wife could take 12-6 bark. but perhaps better (and cheaper) to get a Nalu..

advice from people with dw experience in these conditions welcome. straight question: is a 10-6 type of board more fun in short period DW than a 12-6 or 14 dedicated DW board. ?

IMO.. No.. They don't work as DW boards.. Well not really very good.. All surfing boards seem to do is get a push along and surge for a moment or two.. There are a few big surfing type boards that seem to work better than others but for me DW'ing is all about getting planing or gliding for more than a few seconds.. (the 11'4" Nalu is one of the better ones).. In really wild conditions they can start to work better but they take more skill and effort compared to a bigger board that is deigned for flat water racing or DW'ing.. It's do'able.. and we used these boards for years in the early days of DW'ing here.. But I'd rather take a visit to the dentist than use one now.. They just don't have the glide of the bigger boards.. On an 11'4" you might catch a runner for 15-20 meters and you think wow, that was great.. But in the same conditions on a 12'6" or 14 you would catch that same runner for 50-60 meters and you would think.. Waa-hoo.. That was awesome.. But if it's all you have and if it gets you out there having a go.. Go for it.. and have fun.. and yes.. IMO a longboard shape board like the 11'4" Nalu is a much better DW board than your shorter type 10' length boards.. But in ANY conditions a 12'6" or 14' board will be MUCH better.
