I've been asked a few times now about how's the best way to fix a lifting deck grip..I know my friend Oliver's is also starting to lift up in a small area also.

This is a common problem...You have a few options with fixing a lifting deck grip..and I also have a couple of pictures.

Supa glue is one option..and it might work ok on a small area but any runs or lump go rock hard and I'm not sure how long it will last...I have used some sort of industrial aqua type supa glue once but it's expensive and hard to come by.

The next option is what most people use..Quick grip..or contact adhesive..The yellow stuff that you coat both surfaces with and let get touch dry and then push together..It works but is tricky and messy.

The main problem with contact adheasive is you can't fix a problem like this (see first pic) without pulling it up more so you can get at it..and you risk doing more damage trying to lift it up.

The third option..and what I did with mine..I used silicone rubber cement..I bought a small tube from my local Bunnings store..It's black and used for sealing auto window seals...Autobarn should also have it.

I first I flushed it with fresh water to get the salt out..let it dry..and squeezed some silicone glue in..Pushed it down and some will ooze out..I whiped the excess off and put some tape on it it to hold it down while it dried.

Anyone else have anything to add about fixing a lifting deck grip?

Some people might know the stuff DJ has mentioned as Sikaflex, pretty much the same. Be careful as not all brands of this stuff are the same and some have a few chemicals that you wouldn't want near the foam of your deck pad.

It is super strong stuff though, a lot of people use it to assist in attaching body kits to cars in places where screws are not suitable and it keeps them on at high speed.

Hi there,

My first post to this forum after having my new Naish 11'6" SUP for a little over a week now.

DJ thanks for this post and your PM on how to fix a lifting deck grip as my new camo Naish grip was lifting in the same spot. Just a question on that area of the Naish grip...how perfectly should it seal?

I had paddle this morning and have had the board outside in the sun drying and have noticed water coming out from 1 of the spots (when I press down) which I'm thinking needs a bit more of the silicone and tape treatment overnight. When a deck grip, in particluar the Naish camo with raised edges, is properly sealed should no water be coming out or getting in for that matter? I guess I'm just curious about the composition of the deck grip and whether it does absorb water?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks

Welcome to the forum....My guess is that the grip is not water absorbent (JB will know for sure)...and I think it's a bit of an ongoing job fixing bits here and there that may start to lift every now and then.

The idea is to get them early and hopefully is will settle down after a while..Out of the four corners that I fixed up with the silicone a few weeks ago one of them is just starting to lift a little now..Well not lifting..just not staying down properly at the edge and I also get a little water run out sometimes.

I think when the grip gets dented or creased before sticking it down those lines form an air gap where the glue goes off a little and causes these issues.

It also depends on how well you cleaned the surface before sticking it down..It's worth taking your time and doing it right.

Hey dj, how are you mate if you read my other post you will see i am pretty stoked out in the surf on the 11 6" south point, but after only 2 days in the surf the whole front of the deck up near the nose was lifting ad flapping off all the way about 12 " down. I glued it back down with roofing silicone 780 roof & gutter, works a treat, down further from here the next day another spot started lifting, i ran out of silicone so used super glue, i will see how this works also.

I know that's a problem with the Kalama's but I'm amazed that it's lifted so soon.

The ones that I've seen lift has also been in that area..It must be the force of the whitewater washing over the deck paddling out?

Let's hope it doesn't continue all round the rest of the board.

It will be interesting to see how the supa glue works for you.

I was talking to the local GSI rep yesterday that was at the surf shop I frequent, He was there to stick down three or four lifting deck pads on Bongas and Kalamas. He said on the earlier ones they just glued the pads and stuck them on. Now they glue them stick them on and put the whole board in a vacuum bag to get even pressure over the whole deck, and are paying a bit more attention to it.....

He's organising a Walden 10'10" demo for me to grab next week so I'll ask him what the verdict is on the chipping outer shell.

There will be a few NSP 11' SUPs for demo kicking around in the next few weeks apparently which will be interesting, there is more info (sales spiel) and some pictures on the New Surf Project website about them.

Cheers

Yeah i was pretty blown away how quick the deck grip lifted also, but it was getting a thrashing in the whitewater, still it should have lasted longer. I ran duct tape all down the rails and electrical tape on the paddle, i pretty much have to duct tape it every time i go out in the surf.

Thanks DJ I am going to give it a try. I never had much success with contact cement repairs on my sailboard deck pads.
