Hey, so my SUPs rails are looking a little worse for wear - paint chips mostly from my paddle over a couple of years use.

Im keen to give them a good clean up, then put some rail tape on after I have done a bit of a repair.

I am considering doing a sand back of the chips, then respraying the rails, then taping.

What I want to know is: Sanding tips (ie what grit sizes) and probably most importantly, paint tips.
I had a chat to somebody a few months ago who used enamel paint on their rails and it looked reeally nice, but is that the right stuff to use in terms of longevity? He said he got the paint colour matched and then made into a spray can then applied.

Any board repairers/ makers out there can give me some words of wisdom?

Cheers,

Chris

Another thought might be to just buy some of the coloured rail tape – i'm thinking ION Rail Saver – and just put it over the top of it all… Could be an option!

Will the chips affect how well it adheres?

As long as nothing is loose (paint chips…) and you wipe the rails with an alcohol wipe – or similar – it should stick to pretty much anything.

One point though, are any of the chips through the glass/carbon at all? They need to be properly patched...

Have a look at these as options…:

Yeah cheers Todd, that ion tape looks like the good stuff.

I still feel like I want to fix up my rails first though - knowing my luck I'd be the one guy who has his tape fall off, and I think I would just feel better knowing that the tape isn't hiding stuff that I am not 100% happy about.

So.... back to my original question...... who has done a successful paint chip repair and respray? I guess I really want to know if enamel paint is too hard out to be spraying on to my board, it seems kinda drastic!
