I'm trying to workout how to compare your flat water training times ,so that when you go into a downwind race you have a rough idea what time you should be doing.

Example - race is 16 k downwind race ..... flat water training is 16k

(I understand the conditions play a big part ) but just to give me some sort of idea would it be a 5min differance? more/less?

This is only a example and my understanding would be that you would have to train upto 20k to cover fitness etc for this sort of distance ,plus downwind training.

I hope this makes sense !

Craig.. Our main down wind run is about 16 klms long and in no wind it takes us about 1 hour 15 minutes..

and on a good down-winder it takes us about 55 minutes.

Good luck in Hawaii.

Downwinders are interval exercises. Lots of short sprints to get on runners, u don't need to train long distances to get downwinder fitness. Just do short explosive training. Downwinders are 90% skills in reading the ocean. Almost two different sports flat and ocean

HI DJ,

Not having a go just curious. Is the run definitely 16km? An average speed for a good run would then be 17.45 km/h which is mind blowingly fast. Even the no wind time averaging 12.8 km/h makes me think I'm doing the wrong sport as that's a good average for any windy downwinder outside of Maui.

DJ's post has me a little anxious about joining in one of these infamous downwinders then...

I'd imagine one of the Melb Breezer DW crew would have garmin'd the DW run but on the map St Kilda to Sandy is about 10km as the crow flies, by road I'd guess about 12-13 from jetty rd to catani gardens (I ride it nearly every day)

Langridge St StKilda to the Gates of Hell at Sandringham Yacht Club is 11km on my iPhone GPS.

DJ may be talking about Ricketts Point.

I knew someone would do the calculation to keep me honest..

I think we could do our normal run (St K to Sandy) in about 45 minutes on a really good day.. Most really good days we stop and regroup just to keep together and say "how good is this"..

I just looked at a Google map before.. Saw 5klms on the bar at the bottom and looked at the map thinking.. Yeah about three times that.. But obviously it's actually not that far.

Btw.. We don't do our DW'ers like a race or with a time to beat.. It's all about fun.. Relaxing and coasting for a bit and then put in hard to catch a runner and then back off again to recover.

I'll take my iPone with me on the w/e and check the distance and ave speed etc.

16k in 1:15 is 7.9 mph or 12.8 kph. Very respectable maliko speed on a standup. Strong steady wind necessary.

16k in 0:55 is 10.8 mph or 17.5 kph. This is world class oc-1 speed in ideal, perfect, exceptional conditions at maliko. Dave K's maliko record on standup is almost 10 mph.

Time to get a garmin 305 DJ.

Hope you can make it out next summer.
