Went to Thousand Peaks on south side morning for my last surf session and bumped into Giampaolo Cammarotta who writes the Maui Blog Spot mauisurfreport.blogspot.com/

He was going surfing with his Starboard 7'4" x 29.5 POD, I actually tried it last year but now it has a mast track and a single front footstrap for surfing - not windsurfing.

On the Blog he has written a really detailed report about the installation and the pro's and con's of having the strap there.

Asked if I could try it so we swapped boards and went out into small surf but at least with very few people. The 7'4 POD is actually pretty easy to paddle and quite stable. No glide and not too many strokes on each side though.

Super fun on the little waves, it's fast and so so manoeuvrable, compared to the 9'2 x 27 Kazuma I was on it was just way more fun, and actually more stable.

Found the strap a little annoying at first but then started to put my foot into it, just had hints of what it could do on a few of the cleaner faces. Surprised that it didn't feel more dangerous like you were going to twist your ankle, but I am very used to windsurf straps.

Read the blog if you are interested, I'd certainly consider putting one on now that I've tried it.

Thanks GP, great last morning thanks to the 'flying saucer' with the handle

This is a photo of GP I pinched from the blog....

Thanks Jonathan.. Maybe it's a windsurfing thing.. I find it very hard to get used to being 'un-connected' to my board after so many years of windsurfing.. It's gotta help with floaters etc.. I know JP likes to use a strap also.

When are you back?.. PM me with the details..

You would just set it up for natural or goofy.

You wouldn't use the strap while paddling out.

kiting surfboards straps are straight

I reckon it'd help in tighter turns heaps

going for the big dig on the rail with your back foot and lifting pushing with your front, might help get tighter off the top on you back hand for sure

don't go it myself. straps, boots etc are only for when your going that fast you need them to stay on imo.

I brought this up in a topic over a year ago. I heard people were doing it on Maui and some
were even attempting flips, not like in the above clip, but like rodeo flips on the wave.

Jonathan, remember I bought the footstrap plugs to put in our customs? I'm guessing they
are still at your house somewhere.

I rekon it is cheating somewhat but would definitely be fun and test the limits of what is possible.
