The other day I saw a car with a couple of those cheap sit-on kayaks on the roof and wondered if you could stand and paddle on them, then this appeared:

If boards like the Penetrator are super fast on flat water then it follows that manufacturers could easily adapt kayak designs to make cheap flat water SUP for the masses.

hi corgo,iI think the future of SUP could well go this way, well one future anyway.Ithink there will always be the custom ,high end performance based designers and manufacturers but surely most people ,maybe me included cant tell the difference between a 2009 model naish wizbang ($2000)!! and a Chinese rotomoulded polythene boat($200)!!.This is starting to sound like rant but --any how this is not what I was going to post about so I'll start again.I recently built my first surfboard ,an Xps foam and epoxy thing just to see if i really did like stand up paddle boarding.Yes i'm hooked ,but due to a lack of volume in the board I find that i can only stand up in no wind/glassy conditions. So I've been kneeling to stay stable, then popping up on the wave -FAB .But it got me thinking ,if I'm going to Kneel why not use a double ended paddle - this is even better . Paddle surfing like this has some big advantages-the power generated by the kayak paddle makes paddling out/catching waves easy especially when offshore winds are a problem and because i'm paddleing on my knees I dont need a board that gives me stability ,that is I can surf a board that is more suited as a surfboard and not an oversized malibu . OK I'm a crap(50year old) surfer but using this technique I catch more and longer waves and it makes me think using this style could a younger/better surfer use a true performance shortboard ,say 7' and 4" thick to realy rip.anyway my point is I love the single blade stand up paddle on flat water but for surfing the kayak paddle is more powerfull, better balanced and easier to use.Oh! forgot to mention ,the paddle needs to be non feathered so when you pop up the blades dont dig in and flip you off

Gorgo, I've seen a couple of these lately where the Penetrator has been referred to as a flatwater board. It is so far from this and was never designed as one it is an extremely efficient open ocean board, if I designed and built one with flat water in mind it would be vastly different........

There was one not a YOLO but a SURF kayak roto moulded out at my break the othe week it had the same nose as the YOLO. This fellow took a couple of shoulders and made them. Then he thought I can paddle inside where that SUP fella is. LOL.

He paddled straight inside me and took off on the otherside of the peak and ended up on the reef. He had to have another go but from the correct side of the peak and still ended up on the reef and lost the canoe as it was a two footer instead of the first one which was a one footer.

The roto moulded board has only one thing going for it PRICE POINT, they are cheap and HEAVY. I you have a couple of them you will need a trailer to cart them around and they are ONLY for flatwater.
