Next Sat 23/5/09 is looking good.. Real good.. and it's about time we got a honking north wind for a good down-winder.

Dave will have his 16' DC and Jonathan will have his new 14' Pene.. Maybe Matt will come with his 16' Pene and Dean with his new custom 14'er.

We will aim for a 930am start from St Kilda and go to Rickets point.. It's 20 klms and about two hours of constant runners.

DJ

Forecast for Saturday 23rd

Mostly sunny. Winds north to northeasterly averaging up to 35 km/h.

Mostly sunny.. Min11 Max21

Sounds good DJ. That nasty word is appearing in that forecast though, "Northeast".
Fingers crossed it's straight north!

If the conditions are good, I'm in
By the way, had a great paddle on Saturday from Flinders to the pines. Good solid waves and this is a great route for a sout/west downwinder, Flinders to Somers is a good length trip and some wave potential on the way. We can keep it in mind for the future.

Brendan that wind going slightly nor'east is not a problem paddling from St Kilda to Rickets.. It's just going from Rickets to Frankston that it's a problem..

Heh, dont even joke about it DJ

Do you think I'll be ok paddling in a 3/2 full steamer (unsealed)? I suppose I can just unzip if it gets too hot

It's going to be warm and sunny (fingers crossed) and I will be wearing boardies and a wetsuit vist under my sun top.

I'd be too hot paddling in a full steamer even if it is unsealed and only a 2/3.

It's back on guys.. .. But not Saturday.. It's now Sunday.. and it looks good.

Those who want to do a car shuffle can meet at Rickets point at 9am and load up to head up to St Kilda and we plan to kick off at St Kilda at 930am..

The corner of Langridge St and Beaconsfield Pde..

www.google.com.au:443/maps?hl=en&q=melbourne+maps&ie=UTF8&split=0&gl=au&ei=8iQWSqntIZaHkQXf0aj1DA&ll=-37.855389,144.966016&spn=0.0082,0.019054&z=16

It should take two hours max.. Remember it's not a race.. It's a cruise with runners and lots of fun.

All are welcome.

DJ

Forecast for Sunday
Winds: North to northeasterly 20 to 30 knots decreasing to 15 to 25 knots
during the afternoon then decreasing to 15 to 20 knots during the evening.
Seas: 0.5 to 1.5 metres.

Anyone doing it on a board smaller than 10'6"? I don't fancy the drive to Inverloch to pick up the ocean liner.

Yeah sweet, just organised a board (Naish Glide) to use through the SUP Bus.

Oliver I reckon they would probably have an 11'6 you could rent if you dont feel like the drive.

Just playing devils advocate here....

for a downwinder don't you need wind? It's dead still here and I'm looking at the predictions and my gut feeling is at 9:30am we will have glass. I've been wrong before but maybe a paddle St Kilda to Williamstown and back is looking like a better proposition? Save all that car swapping.

There will be wind in the morning but I'm tipping it could have a fair bit of east, at least NE. I hope it is N for you guys so it makes it a bit easier.

I might try borrow my old board off my mate if I wake up with some energy and come join you!

Woke up this morning and it was almost dead still. I was sceptical but DJ rang me up and said "it's on" so I put my trust in him and headed down. Five of us paddled (myself, DJ, Oliver, MickV and JonathanC). We went from St Kilda to Riggots point which is about 20 km? Stopped along the way at Green point to chat with some locals on the beach and briefly one point before Riggots for a leak. Took a little longer than 2 hrs (like 2x as long LoL)

10 am at St Kilda still flat but the wind arrived almost on the change of hour and we set off. For the first hour it must have been 15-20 knots NNE with gusts to 25-ish. Water surface was pretty flat but after a while some runners got happening and managed to catch quite a few. However after Green point (about halfway) the wind dropped right off and much of the rest of the paddle was in very calm conditions. Still, a good day out. Oliver paddled his 10'6 and went ok. Still came dead last but stayed in touch and he wasnt the ball and chain you'd expect. (Everyone else was on 12'+ boards)

DJ and JonathanC took some pics and I'm sure if anyone asks nicely they will put them up

Yeah.. Two hour max.. Honest..

Here's a couple of pics from today.. Our down-winder took us past the sinking Cerberus and Lobes risks a $5000 fine..

I thought something must have gone wrong. I drove down to get some photos from the cliff tops along the way but couldn't see you guys anywhere. Then went and got a coffee at the tea house and went back to spot you guys again.

Thought it must have been cancelled or something.

Here's a few pics that I took along the way.

Boards all lined up.. Two Naish Glides (Lobes and me).. a 12'6" Starboard (for Jonathan).. a 10'6" Stonker (Oliver) and a 12' Cobra windsurfer (for Mick).

We're off and the wind just starts to kick in behind us.

Under the St Kilda kiosk.

Just coming out of the windshaddow of St Kilda pier.

Waves start to pick up and runners start to happen.

Jonathan doing a shaka.. or picking his nose with his little finger.

After about an hour of paddling we stopped off at the little sheltered beach at Green Point.

Back off again and catching little waves from the dieing wind.

I had this yacht use me as a jibe marker.. Jeez he came close.

The wind had dropped and so had the waves.

We paddled in close to the shore to get some glassy conditions.. Here's Oliver setting a stonking pace..

Mick did well to paddle the old tippy windsurfer so far.

This is the Cerberus that sinks lower each year.. It will be gone in a few years.

While Oliver paddled into shore to buy a cold drink we waited and Lobes mucked around on the Glide.

Then is was Mick's turn to go in to find the mens room.

More waiting around.. No wonder it took a little more than the 'two hours max'..

Back off and heading for Rickets Point.

There we are.. The finish is in sight.

We all move forward on our boards to lift the fins and stop them cluncking on the rocks.

Lucky Jonathan has a big enough car that can drive us all back to our own cars at St Kilda... Thanks mate.
