Anyone taken there sup here , heading there in the early season of march ,winds sometimes then arent as strong and sometimes making conditions a bit more peaky. Planning to be hitting outer kongs and kongs , i think the pad and speedies might be a bit much -see what happens. After some advice with the tides as well , as well as board sizes? thanks

Don't know about SUP but 2 different mates have surfed it on waveskis. One of em had it massive (10 feet Hawaiian). The main problem is getting caught inside as it always is with a SUP (or goatboat) in gnarly waves. A nice narrow custom gun would be the ticket, definitely not a malibu type SUP.

I reckon if you can avoid getting washed over dry reef or onto exposed rocks you can ride anything on a SUP as long as it is designed for those sort of waves. I don't know how heavy you are but a normal shortboard SUP and a 9'2-6 gun would be the go I reckon. Take booties!!!!

Visited Bali last October and left my 9ft 10 in 31 wide round tail stinger quad fin with my friend Daniel our local guide. Air lines bit restrictive on 3000mm and weight.perfect at rights at Sanur reef and not too long. Glassed with 12 oz kevlar fully deck gripped and in board bag and 10ft leg rope. You are welcome to give it a try.On my way back from Bali on the flight a surfer was coming back from G-Land and said he went through 3 of his 5 boards in a couple of days sounds heavy duty on boards.Gives us a contact via the forum if interested. regards

Been there twice in the eighties, Kongs and Money Trees would be the go unless you are super talented. Speedies with a sup would be great to watch but I wouldnt like to have one in the line up with me unless the rider was very good on it and even then the wide ones and bomb sets would make it tricky

Paddle out...??? Maybe go way down the reef??? And pretty much high tide and booties are a must

Tiger tracks would be fun on one

The wide sets that swing back in would be very interesting with an sup

Take a lot of leg ropes and good luck with it

The parting statements are Good Luck !!

However, don't under-estimate the speed and power of that wave. So far, I haven't see SUP's (and riders) being quite capable of the speeds that good surfers generate on shortboard equipment (and the responsive accelerating in the tube that you can more easily generate on say a 6'6 step-up size board +...). It is one of the longest and fastest waves around, when the swell is on. Plus it is a very crowded wave.

I would be heading to Tiger Tracks down in the bay. It is a high tide wave. There are a couple of little options down there depending on swell, but the Right Hander is the most reliable.... Also, other places in Indo have a bigger selection of waves within their immediate proximity, compared to G-Land.

HOWEVER, having said that, I would hitting Sumba with the SUP. Less crowds. Worst case, ferry leaves Bali 1 or 2 times per week. You could get any size board onto a ferry!

Been there repeatedly since 81' - last time was April last year.

Bobby's actually has a few SUPs in camp (very beaten by the end of season no doubt)-real idea that they be ridden when the surf is flat-as they were huge non-performance boards.

G-Land is definitely 'doable' on a SUP with the right equipment and provided your skills are up to it and you have an awareness of what's going on out there.

Speed Reef is definitely not a wave you'd want to SUP on unless you're an extremely experienced surfer with tailored equipment-Kongs (when small), 20/20 and TTs would all be OK to SUP.

But, why bother-it's a performance wave which suits 'normal' surfing and there's plenty of other waves more suitable to a SUP.

That sounds like a challenge to me

I think taking a few boards might be some of the best advice you will get! Its an unreal spot - make sure you get some footage of yrself speeding down the line and post it. Enjoy and good luck with yr adventure.

Thanks for all the great advice That time of year i thought wasnt right for sumba, going to gland 1st week of opening in march , means less crowds , not epic usually then, but hey you never know , hopefully a bit of paddling around some not so crowded waves and no bemo to worry about getting anywhere , downtime in traffic .This will be a good adventure with the sup, with not a lot of messing about to get to

Green Manace,

Yeah, fair call about crowds, minimal messing about, adventure, easy enough to get to....

Kute/Kuta Lombok is also a good base, for another trip. The local boys down there are great at getting you to a wave that suits you.... You wake up, have breakfast, and reconvene at about 8am, and if you ask for an uncrowded wave, they will deliver.... it may or may not be sick pits, but they can deliver you to a nice wave, short travel, warm water.....
