Hello, I'm wondering if anyone can help me. I need to get a unlimited sup to Hawaii from Gold Coast. I need to get it to Maui. I know I can use Young brothers for Oahu to Maui but not sure how to get to Oahu from oz. I've tried Qantas and pacific air to see if I can pay extra to take on plane but no good. Any help would be very appreciated. Thanks.
Try Qantas unaccompanied baggage - I used this to take surfboards and surfski to Fiji. You drop it at the freight terminal near Brisbane airport (not sure about Gold Coast) and it goes on the next flight where there is space in the luggage hold. I used it a few times without issue and whatever I sent usually arrived within a day or 2 of my arrival - to be safe they recommend dropping off a few days early if you need it straight away at the other end. Much cheaper than excess baggage too. They don't always tell you about it - I got tipped off after speaking to a number of different people when I moved to Fiji a few years ago.
Only way your getting an unlimited to Oahu is to air or sea freight. If you are going to Maui than you will have to clear the board through customs (plan on wasting half a day) and than drop it off to Young Brothers near the harbour. Your looking at 3 months without the board for sea freight or roughly $1200 air freight each way. Best bet is to try and buy a 2nd hand one on Maui. Advertise on Craigslist etc. It will definitely save you mentally and money wise.
Funny u say that cam, a 12.6 is all I own at the moment cause I sold all my other boards to go on this trip! I think I'll leave the 32 miles on a 12.6 to the loonies (or people who paddle on for 24hrs straight;)
Thanks for the ideas people, ill try that Qantas thing.
If the qantas thing doesn't work I would give a moving/personal effects company like crown worldwide. You may have more luck with a smaller company. I have no experience but work in the logistics field. Make sure you request a temporay import entry into Hawaii to avoid paying duties and taxes on either side. If you look into it I would be interested to know how they stack up.
Problem is he probably could good luck which ever way you go it's not going to be cheap I would be just getting some DC logos and buying a board there get Trav to hook you up he may be over there

I have heard how quick you are going on the 12'6 so that is all you are allowed to paddle from now on.
Maybe try Air NZ, i think Courts and Fernanda may have brought an f16 back to WA from hawaii with them a couple of year ago? But I've never flown with them and never tried to take anything bigger than a 14 on a plane.
If you can get the board and yourself to Sydney, United Airlines would probably take it as checked baggage for $200 extra each way, but you have to fly via the states so its a very long trip!
Probably stay away from the small shipping companies, they'll be too expensive or won't take it. As someone else said, you'll be looking at $1200-1500 each way for air freight.
