Hi Oliver,

This is not the time to take this lightly and I would be very very carful as to how flipantly you treat this! You may be surprised who reads SB forums and your picture is plastered all over Sea Breeze!!!!!!!!!!

Have you got my point yet?????

I have seen all sorts of beach justice handed out on the west coast and I assure you that its not something you wish to deal with!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let me enlighten you with some exaples:

You will come back to your car and find a mixture of sand and wax has been applied to every window of your car the combination ensures you need to relace them all!

The same can be applied to every panel of your car! the next step up!

You sudden have lowered your car to a more sporty look as there is no air in the tyres or even sportier it is sitting on blocks and you dont have any wheels.

You suddenly have all round AC as you no longer have windows!

Then we go to after you wipe out and your head pops up you will be facing the fins end of a surfboard being rammed at your head! The swim back is not pleasent wondering when mr chompy will appear and the medical bills are also a drag!

This I assure you Oliver is the light end of the stick it gets much more unpleasent from there

Think I am kidding with any of the above, drop into any of the police stations down here and ask them!!!!

We have a great relationship with all the surfers and clubs here and thats the way we want it to stay!

My suggestion is that if we see anyone engaging in this sort of activity "Wave Hogging" we at least have a gentle word with with them!

If we dont self regulate I assure you it will be done fore us!

Best regards

Happy days

Phill

Crikey, what has the world come too?

I can't believe that there are so many inconsiderate sup boarders snaking 1 foot waves from the old school semi-retired mal riders.

What I think we need to do is discuss the issue with the Victorian Police force. I'm sure they could be persuaded to buy 50 purpose built goat boats to patrol all the 1 foot breaks during winter to make sure this sort of stuff doesn't happen again. Even 10 undercover cops riding surfmats fitted with radios and gps units, pretending to be holiday makers, could make a big difference during the winter months.

Nice one Oliver very funny, however whats with the old retired longboard comment?

I don't condone violence of any sort to person or property and dont totally agree with Phills response, but I think he might have been a bit p122ed off and having a vent that after all the behind the scenes work he did for OG13 to make sure local noses were'nt put out of joint and set a good vibe, a couple of wave hogs have stuffed some of that good vibe, and he maybe thought the piss take was directed at him not the situation.

Hi Guys!

I was raising an issue that I see as being a concern and wanted breezers input, ideas, concepts and thoughts as to constructive things that could be done to difuse the situation! No to imflame it!

Mollydooka, JonathonC

1) Tongue in cheek comments on the web have consequenses and a way of inflaming issues and getting out of hand as not everyone will see them as funny.(Case in point how people reacted to my black humour)

2) I dont condone violence under any circumstances, but you need to be aware it happens and surf rage is alive and happening!

3) My Rationale is exactly as you have stated Mollydooka ALOHA at all times!
We call people into waves, call out sets etc etc etc. Anyone that has surfed with us has enourmous FUN!

Lacey 100% Agree with your thoughts!

Teatree
I agree Brooko , it wouldnt matter what you do.A grumpy bastard is a grumpy bastard whatever he/she is riding.

Sup riders arent second class citizens , respect is a two way street!

The people in this case have shown all suppers respect, I guess thats why they are more than a little miffed when 2 of our tribe burn them 3 days in a row for hours on end! We all get tarred with the same brush!

Reading all this. I dont get it. Surfin's meant to be non stressful and fun
Glad i live where i do.

i try to have fun for sure, no sure how crowded it is were you are, but the eastern states, crowds are a fact of life. you just can't whip on down the tweed every day.
cheers
ps, its why i very rarely hop on the shortie, can't handle guys climbing all over the top of each other

It's gotta be frustrating livin in a crowded spot lacey.
I never have so prob dont have the right to coment.
But, the nearest towns on the coast are to the east is Eucla 900kms and to the west is Hopetoun 150km as the crow flys.
No crowds even in summer

Dont mean to rub salt in it mate. Just how it is.

Always welcome. Let us know if your eva ova this way..

I'm with Phil, I'm in a fairly small town with hundreds of mals and shortboarders and 4 sup surfers. We know we're on the bottom of the food chain and take care not to go the hog. With a bit of care we can get all the waves we need without pissing people off. But if we get greedy I'm sure it would be on for the young, the old and the Captain!!!

My attitude is simple.

I treat every surfer (young or old) with kindness and respect..as if they have the power to take away my ability to SUP there.

Just like I did when I came across bush walkers..when I used to mountain bike on walking tracks.

Wouldn't it be nice if everyone had the same attitude.

There's a couple of fairly simple techniques you can use on SUP to get loads of waves but not hog them all

The first step is to view the lineup as a queue where you start on the outside and work your way in to the peak.

You can also sit on the shoulder and go for everything that comes along. If the rider on the inside gets the wave you can pull out but if they miss it you can continue and take the wave. You get lots of great views of guys dropping into waves and it feels pretty good being there.

When you get a little tired you can sit out the back and take the first wave in each set. The first wave is not usually the biggest so you are signalling to the lineup that a set is coming. If you do it right you can get back out in time to grab the last wave of the set if there's nobody on it. Alternately you can signal the set to the lineup then paddle out for the bigger second wave leaving the smaller wave for the guys on the inside. It's also good to paddle out slowly to save your energy for the next set.

If you've been riding short boards or mals for years it take a little bit of gear changing because snaking is standard procedure. Hopefully it will be a few years before SUPs have to start snaking each other.

None of this helps with the hurt feelings of all the other surfers. They might not be getting waves even though there are waves to be had. Certainly the last time I prone surfed with a SUP I was envious of the fun he was having.

had a surf on a beachie today, few guys out, a mixture.i could sense a few raised eyebrows.i caught inside, outside, wide ones and some with just no one there. now they might like the idea i got so many waves, but i never once took a wave with any one in a position to have it and i also mean the guys on shortboards that have to sit inside a bit. if they were there it was theirs. just got to play it smart.
cheer
ps even sat out a few sets

Yeah I understand they know you but just don't get what they thought you could possibly do.

Hey Downwind, blocking is common at the better waves on Vic east coast. If someone is targetting you they will rarely make eye contact with you and just paddle inside you/in your way and get the waves. I rekon if you accidently hit them this would just give the perfect excuse to abuse you. It has been happening for years (especially good shortboarders with mals). It's obvious when it's happening so I just paddle to the next bank or sit down the line a bit. Give 'em a hoot if they get a good wave to ease the tension sometimes helps.

Yep - it was a beach break with plenty either side and its early and cold and I'm the only one out there and this guy comes and parks 25 metres inshore of me exactly where I would take off to. WTF!!!? Anway I'm a kook so I had to move down the beach a bit - which was no drama. Still caught as much as I could handle. First 'big day out' in head high+ faces I was smiling.

That may not have been deliberate, usually they will shadow you and paddle where you paddle and just get in the way. But in your case you would need to get the wave and bottom turn around them on the inside otherwise they will catch the wave as well on the inside of you and call you off. But don't do it every set wave cos thats how you pi$$ people off.

You see blocking happen in competition surfing all the time with the priority rule.

Touched a sore point there?

Say that to Blane-his boards are NOTHING like mals.

I just surf my SUB like I do my shortboard-I sit (stand) with rest of em' (shortboarders/mals etc. etc.) and take off where they do-no issue then, you're just another surfer out there with the rest. Kinda' helps that I'm a local competent surfer and know the other 'locals' out there and know what the 'order' is-and for those that don't surf regularly, don't be mistaken, there IS an order out there.

I totally understand where Phil is coming from-it's a result of those who don't know the order fugging it for other SUP surfers who do and have taken some time to cultivate their position in the lineup through respect and an understanding the order.

Again, those that have surfed for years and surfed various locales will understand, those that haven't, wont.

Poor Relative,

Having reread what I wrote to Oliver yesterday I can now see how it could be seen to imply that I am insighting violence and that is simply not the case, if that is how the post was read then I sincerly appologise without reserve to all!

The written word can be taken in many different contexts unfortunately!

I was not threatening anyone, I was giving examples of what has happened in the past to longboarders, short boarders etc etc on surf breaks both on the west coast and all around the country! I too have experience this first hand, hence the emotion in the thread!

I did take personal offence to Oliver posting what I believed was a reply (no matter how humorous it was intended to be) that in my opinion (rightly or wrongly) would imflame tensions, when I was looking for constructive input!

I have 3 daughters 8, 11 and 13 who I love dearly and want them to be safe and enjoy a sport they love! In this area I have an huge amount of ego and pride and will not appologise for it.

As they are girl surfers and now stand up paddlers as well they are breaking quite a few ridiculous stereotypes.

When the actions of a few inconsiderate people destroying Karma at a local break impacts on them, yes I get emotional.

I cant explain it any better than that!

Another way to avoid crowds & the problems associated..... go look for your own quiet break......its a big land of ours, these SUB's we ride are great for riding lesser breaks, we dont have to be lemmings.
In this shot below, back of PRK, there is 5 ks of various beach breaks, some can better than Winki or Rincon at the same small size.

Hi Phil,

I just found your original post a bit like you were taking the high moral ground and preaching to the converted. I would say everyone on this forum gives respect to others in the water - this theme of respect is repeated hundreds of times here. One of the reasons I like this sport/recreation is so I can surf places well away from the hoi polloi.

I think the longboarders had the problem by pulling you aside and talking to you about what happened, If I was put in your situation I would have told them to go and complain to Deryn Hinch, or better give them el presidentes digits.

I found it funny that you decided to place yourself in some sort of authority in this forum to "touch base" with all of us and discuss a situation that happened to you. The situation that happend probably happens all the time and I think it is very unlikely to have anything to do with another "breezer"

Oh yeah Mac - I did say "semi" retired. That's you isn't it?
