Had a pretty long paddle yesterday and last night I noticed I had a big blister at the base of my thumb. This seems like an inevitable side effect of paddling, at least until I harden my hands up enough to prevent it.

But I was wondering what everyones thoughts were on the pros and cons of gloves? I imagine they would protect your hands well, but theyd probably be hot and stinky too. But for long paddles (ie half a day or more) they'd probably give a benefit?

IMO wet gloves keep your hands constantly wet and causes chafing. I've experimented with them kayaking, and prefer not to use them. Your hands will harden up quickly. You can assist the process by regularly rubbing your hands with a mixture of baby oil and metho, but unless you're paddling big distances, probably not worth the bother.

I heard that rubbing your hands in dog poo helps.. and the not the old dry stuff.. it needs to be the soft warm stuff.

Just kidding.. .. I've seen heaps of pics of the SUP racers in the US using those short fingerless cycling gloves... They might be worth a try.

fingerless would definitely be the way to go.

And yeah having wet hands (that dry quickly) would be better than having wet gloves on.

Hmmm, reminds me of a quote from Laird in the old Neil Pryde windsurfing video "Fast Forward"

"Wearing gloves and booties is like tying knots with mittens"

I will say the worst blisters I ever got while windsurfing were while wearing gloves...quickly got rid of them. It doesn't take long for your hands to harden up.

Maattteeeeee, have done loads of manual labour in my day,the answer to your soft hands is urine, thats right bro, piss on em,its a proven hand hardener.Years ago I worked in a brick yard loading bricks on pallets. We had a tally of 42 tonnes each per day,and as you can imagine the crew changed hands weekly. But the guys who hung in had hands like leather, piss on em mate,
