Yesterday it was another cold and foggy morning here in Melbourne and after a nice little sleep in I checked the weather and saw that it would be perfect conditions for another Phillip Island paddle.. I knew the fog wouldn't clear till about midday and because I was working in the arvo I was a bit short on time so I thought that once I paddle over to French Island instead of going right and going to Phillip Island I would go left and explore French Island a bit.

I loaded my 17 and hit the Golden Arches for some raisin toast.. I'm off the bacon and egg muffins.. It was still cold a foggy and I was hoping that it would clear to a sunny day because some days never really clear up.. At least it was going to be glassy.

I got to Crib Point and good news.. The sky suddenly cleared.. Waa-hoo!

Once at the water I saw why the sky had cleared.. The wind was up.. Bugger.. It was a side on north wind about 10 knots and enough to make it a bit choppy.

I thought jeez I've come this far so I might as well still do the paddle while thinking I hope this north wind doesn't get any stronger or I'll be heading for Tassie.. I got my gear ready.

Naish board and Kialoa paddle.. check.

Balin leggie and PFD.. check.

Drinking water and chocolate (cordial and toblerone).. check.

Oakley's and iPone.. check.

Ipod shuffle and Croc's.. check.

Raw waterman's hat and clean undies.. check (I think).

I'm off and it looked nice and glassy at the boat ramp but I could see the wind further out.

Time check.. 12:10.. I need to be back and on the road home by 3:00.. btw my new watch tells me it's low tide.. My eyes tell me it's high tide.. Stupid watch.

Looking back.

Looking towards French Island.. I had my music blaring and the song on my play list is Thin Lizzy's Chinatown.. I was singing out load and feeling good.

Half way across and a few wobbly moments in the side chop.. The wind was only 5-10 knots but I'm sure at times in the gusts there was white caps.. I took the odd right turn to catch a runner or two but had to remind myself I had street clothes on.. and my iPod wasn't waterproof.. Because I had just seen the new 'Soul Surfer' movie a few days before I kept seeing dark shadows in the water.. This is a very sharky place.

I'm there.. French Island.. and it took me only 42 minutes...

... and I'm going left for a change.

It took a while paddling north to find a sandy beach to land because it was pretty rocky.. I had been drinking heaps and the cool temp had me wishing I had my wetsuit on.. I was busting.

After writing my name in the sand.. well just my initials.. I hadn't drunk that much.. I took a few pictures.

Mmmmm... Toblerone.. and it's the big one.

I rested for a bit.. Then I was paddling north and thinking about how Kylie Minoque has a house on French Island 'and' she just happens to be in town.. Just then I see a girl walking along the beach towards me.. It's Kylie and she must be working on her all over tan.. She asks me if I mind helping rub sunscreen on her back.. Boy what a great day this turned out to be.

More soon.. I've just got a call from MickV to paddle so I'll finnish with some more info and pics later.

I realised there was something a little flaky about this story when you mentioned MickV calling to go for a paddle. Isn't he in NZ? And now that I come to think of it, the bit about Kylie asking you to help rub suntan lotion all over her body... are you sure that really happened? I mean, sunny day and all, but surely not hot enough to tan. But otherwise, great story, totally.

Yes the bloke who remembers to take photos as his board gets blown over the horizon suddenly forgets to take pics as a topless Kylie saunters along the beach. How inconvenient.

Ok.. You want proof.. Here ya go.. I've got pics to proove it and lots of them.. MickV 'is' back from NZ and we had a great paddle today down at Mentone.

Mick's wife calls to say.. No.. You're not buying one.. and swap that new Kialoa race paddle back with DJ before you get too used to it.

Okay, I concede. The Kylie bit must also be true. And very gentlemanly of you not to publish the pics.

Now.. Back to my story.. After I woke from my little day-dream I could see the wind was dropping and there was lots of swans.. No Kylie.. just swans.. I must have counted 20 black swans but they weren't like the ones at St Kilda.. These would not let me get close enough for a good picture.

I headed north along the shore and there were lots of these funny bushes growing in the water.

It was pretty shallow so I must remember next time I come I should do it at high tide.. It was now going out.

I was running out of time looking for Kylie so I headed back for the mainland in the distance.

Even though the wind had dropped off and the waves had also dropped it felt like I was paddling uphill.. When I got to a channel marker I could see how strong the current was.

Almost back now.. I've got Eric Clapton playing on my shuffle and I'm singing out loud to Cocaine.. Some times it's a good thing to paddle alone.

The fishermen that fish there tell me I'm mad and like to tell me about their big shark encounters and how they are often bigger than their boat.

Time check.. Good timing and just enough time to hit Jack's on the way home.

It's very nice.. and very different.. Mick ordered his a little special being the size and rocker that he wanted for our bay (not a bay) conditions.. Mick is coming on our down-winder tomorrow (25-30 knots) and I hope to swap boards with him along the way.. I'll wear my helmet GoPro and get some vid to show how it goes.

That's GOLD DJ !

Here's a few things I've picked up over the last few afternoon's touring on 17 feet;
1) The big "elephant" looking rocks at Limeburner's Boat Ramp, are actually massive sand bag, also with separate massive sand bags underneath the ones you see.
2) A steel barge with "single bed mattresses" hanging from the hand rails, down over the steel gunnels (el-cheapo bumpers!)
3) Those cotton floating cob web things.... what are they anyway !?
4) Definitely noticed some volcano dust in the North and The West
5) My parallel water parking of "17 feet" has improved no end ! Cold water, sea weed, and slime (at some locations) have given some great motivation to gently park up, and hop right onto timber or stone ledges, to keep the feet dry and clean !
6) Millions and millions of dollars worth of boats not getting used !

Had a different experience of going left at a french island today. Last night a guy got eaten by 3 sharks down the coast. St leu was empty this morning and then one guy came out. And again this arvo two guys out. 3/4 ft and glassy.
Still frothing
