Another option that I use is 'google earth' which has a 'measure tool'. The icon looks like a little ruler. When you open it, you have a choice of 'line' or 'path'. Line allows you to measure one straight distance and Path allows you to keep clicking new points and it adds up the total distance as you go. With the aerial photo layer it is easy to track exactly where you either 'went' or 'want to go'. I have checked the measurements using the car speedo and pretty accurate.
