Jaycar electronics have a waterproof camera in their catalogue, the specs seem reasonable except the max water depth.Does anyone have any experience with this camera. At around $170 with a few mounts etc it would seem a good alternative if you want to have a play without a big outlay.Providing of course that it can perform well in the water, the dash of a drift car is very different to a washing machine.

Mate, I've got no experience with the camera you mention, but I did just purchase a cheap action cam myself for $100 delivered off ebay. I did a fair bit of Internet research before the purchase. There are quiete a few decent looking cams in that bracket now, but I'm hoping this one is the pick of the bunch. I choose it after seeing a review online from a guy who reviews a lot of these cheaper action cams. He seem's to think its the best one out there atm for the money. Here's the link to the review, the review also contains links to eBay.

See what ya think.

Here is what I have learnt from all my action cams , Go-Pro , Sony & ION. These 3 pretty match up in specs , but it's the flat lens on the Go-Pro and the way it deals with white balance and infinity focus that gives it the BIG edge. The Go-Pro white is only around $250 and it will eat the cheaper models like what you are asking about. You cannot tell from the camera specs how a camera will perform until you try it. Lets hope someone does bring a really cheap version to knock off Go-Pro but I haven't seen it yet. IMHO

Hey Piros I thought that the GoPro had a fish eye lens , I gotta admit Im a bit over it and I am now trying to flatten all my videos (thank you motion 5).

Hi Piros I'm considering the White Edition but concerned its half the frame rate of the Black Edition (e.g. 1080p 25fps vs 1080p 50fps). Does this actually materialise as visible flicker or is it only an issue with slo mo (which I won't use a lot)? Not worried about still quality either although the supposed superior low light performance of the Black appeals. Cheers

Greg C , the Go-Pro black has 3 settings , narrow , wide & extra wide , plus all the new Go-pros have a Flat port over the lens which lets them focus underwater.

t457118, This was shot on the white and looks pretty nice shot at 1080 x 25p , parts of it are slowed down , even imovie can help smooth this out , just don't slow it down too much. 25p & 50p is fames per second so yes it will be smoother shooting 50 fps when you slow it down in post production but it takes us twice as much space on your card and punishes your computer.

Keep it simple and just shoot alot 2.08 - 2.30 is slowed down and looks pretty smooth to me (shot at 25p)

Cheers Piros your footage looks great! If I want even smoother I can always shoot in 720p 60fps. And as you say its about just using it to the max rather then getting caught up in the spec.
