Sensational news from Portsea this afternoon as Australia's fastest Stand Up Paddler Queenslander Paul 'Jacko' Jackson was bested by Peninsula reigning champ Dave Hunt from Victoria. The other local favourite Cam Hosking came in third, but was disadvantaged by a late start to the race.

This result sets up a fascinating grudge match tomorrow at the SHQ Race to the Cerberus. No doubt both Jacko and Cam will be out to make amends, while Dave will be eager to notch up his first Cerberus win on his home break.

The Sunshine Coast's Woogie Marsh had to sit today's race out with a virus. Meanwhile, international paddling champ and race ambassador Jamie Mitchell cruised around the back of the field offering tips and advice to all paddlers. Hopefully both Woogie and Jamie will be fit and in race mode tomorrow morning at Sandringham, as we may well witness an epic battle over the 5.3km course.

Not aware of Jacko's buoy confusion as he's way too much of a good sport to offer excuses as I'm sure you know. Dave paddled an 18' SIC. Cam was on a Javelin.

Actually Cam's start was comical. The organisers seemed to send us out a few minutes earlier than they'd told us they would so Cam was unaware that the SUP race was about to begin. It was a water start and he was chatting on the beach when the horn blew. I think he gave up about 70 metres.

But tomorrow is the serious race. Looking forward to it.

I think Dave's board used to belong to "Downwinder" (?). That board flies. Also helps that Dave is a strong unit with perhaps the biggest chest I have ever seen !!

I think I will retire now!!
I got a great start and managed to get clear of the first bouy about 50 m ahead of the pack then after weaving through a pod of Dolphins could hear Jacko breathing down my back for the last part of the race.
Had the race been another few minutes Jacko would have smoked me.
It is worth remembering that Jacko paddled 145km last weekend in a 24 non stop effort raising money for flood affected Queenslanders and I am sure that had I attempted that feat I would still be in hostpital, probably in a coma.
I guess you take em when you can get em.
It will be great to see Jamie, Jacko and hopefully Woogie in a race in Port Phillip Bay tomorrow.
Dave
