I spent yesterday as part of a final training assessment for a qual I am doing introducing people to SUP.

We watched some video's, looked at some slides, safety presentation, questionnaires etc and then hit the water armed with that knowledge.

I was stoked to see the crew I taught were up, balanced, relaxed and in control of their boards in about 10 - 15 mins on the water, first time ever. Even with the basics of good paddle technique. Doing kick turns in 60 mins, handling boat wakes etc. I wish when I started someone gave me a few simple key points that mean everything to your balance.

We were watching crew that came down on hire boards on their first go and spending most of their time underwater, paddles backwards, stressed, yelling etc. My people noticed this as well and were stoked they had some structure.

Even more stoked to hear that at least 6 of the 10 plan to paddle more and 2 that said they will buy boards straight up. Having a fun experience first time is always the best way to want to keep doing something!

BIG Thanks to the ROAR shop for looking after us with boards and paddles. They all have your brochure and know where to go to keep going or buy boards.

P.S No I was not paid for the lessons and NO I do not plan to open a hire business.

You should be safe Teatree. They were mostly about 50 y.o lady teachers. Couple of blokes and younger girls also.

They all had fun, which means I passed the assessment!

Nice..

I agree.. 'Some structure' and 'preperation'.. is a very important thing.

I found that often people don't want to listen or learn.. They just want to get on the water asap and have a go..

Yeh that's great, sounds like you like passing on well earned knowledge. And it sounds like your pupils enjoyed reciveing it.Maybe you could try it part time during summer teaching is a very rewarding thing to do.I worked in a pool for a while, did the AUSTswim course and helped out with the swim classes, nothing better than watching the big grin on kids faces when they realise they can do sompthing by them selves.I was'nt here when the thumbs were around but I get the idea and I give you the green one.

Yeah gumballs, I am completing a training and education qualification. As I am doing it externally and work alone the actual presentation side is a challenge as it's difficult to find people that want to sit still and be practiced upon for a couple of hours.

People want to try SUP so it was problem solved, I could gather people who were coincidentally all employees of the place where I am doing my training, my assessor and qualified teachers. I was teaching them to be qualified in the same qualification as they use everyday. Probably a tough audience in reality.

The course requires you to focus upon safety and other key things, and then formulate tools to assess competence as per most courses.

I will be working as a teacher but probably not in this field.

What I would encourage from what I seen is that people should seek basic coaching to get them started. Locally here there is Roar, Jamie Mitchell and Peter Dorries who will all show people more than I ever could.

Not for profit tuition, well organised, future industry profit. Whats with the Red?
well done mate.
Some years ago I encouraged my local high school to purchase windsurfers (10) it was a really great way of introducing people to the sport, I wonder if someone has done this yet with sup, what a great way of getting more young people involved.

I noticed some greasy looks from other operators on the creek that day. I would imagine any red I get comes from people that feel threatened. Really not my issue, don't worry about it. I made mention of certain people in my post and I know these people and explained what I was doing beforehand. They were extremely supportive.

A red for my posts are greens for other people, click away dudes. It makes me think theres something to protect, perhaps I should take another look!

The better people learn to start the quicker they can join SUPSA, join Kelly or Jackos training group and even race in Pete Dorries flat water BOP race this weekend.

I gave you a red and I don't even live in Qld - I find it kind of pathetic that grown men get all worked up about some colored pixels.

Good on ya for teaching some people all the same.

Hey Chris, what is the course you are doing?

I did the CERT IV in workplace assessment and training many years ago, I have worked in roles where adult education is part of the job for many years. I would imagine there are many other courses to help develop competency in this area these days.

Mate, run a course on board building or even just ding repair, I reckon you would get a heap of people interested in coming along to something like that (I'd sign up). and you certainly have the contacts to make a course like that happen.

Hey Jamie, yes mate doing the same course as you.

The board building courses are well under way of concept and design. To be succint they will be the foundation of a recognised trade for surfcraft builders. It's a much bigger story and will no doubt be told over time. I'll give you a rundown next time I see you.
