Surfed my sup at greenmount this morning and I have never ever been so ashamed to call myself a longboarder (ex longboarder)
As I paddled out wide at cooly I lost count of the amount of insults and snide remarks aimed at me because I was on a sup. You know - everything from "get out the back with the other f###ing wave hogs" "you guys are poor excuses for surfers" blah blah blah - you name it, I copped it. And all this was even before I got out to the lineup !!! I eventually cracked the ****s a bit and even though I don't have to justify myself I paddled up to a particurly lippy group of 60yo plus local grumps and said that the reason I ride a sup is because a bad back injury stops me from riding my mal any more and supping is the only way I can get out in the surf. One of them said "oh, you are ok then, you got an excuse" to which they all agreed and I was instantly welcome. HOWEVER I may have ruined my welcome when I suggested they were all F###ing hypocrits and I did not need an excuse and no supper does. I said that I would endeveour to stay out of their way and be respectful but only so long as they did the same for me. I was politely then told to F off. I do not stir up trouble and have actually always avoided it with a passion - I guess I just got the ****s that these old grumpy bastards who would have welcomed me on a mal were so intent on making prix of themselves. I eventually moved inside and surfed the shorey for half and hour and had a blast sharing with boogers and surfers and body surfers and all comers and we all had a great time sharing waves and plenty of stoke to go round. I eventually got out with a huge smile on my face and as I exited the water 2 old guys with mals paddled past me and one said to the other "well theres one less out there, those prix are like a f###ing disease out here" NO, I DIDN'T SAY ANYTHING - I wasnt going to let them spoil it.

Ahhh the QLD points...home to all the love and acceptance any man could ever ask for....seriously though thats a preety **** attitude especailly from a bunch of longboards that are probably cracking the ****s cause SUP's keep them honest....move to Vicco mate and surf by yourself everyday of the week

I'm glad you didn't let them ruin your surf billboard. You did the right thing by giving them a bit back too. The ones with the mouth are usually just bullies and when you have a go back they shut up. I must say I'm suprised you copped that at Greeny though. I surfed there regular for a couple of weeks, earlier this month and had no problems at all. Some of the longboarders were quite happy to have a chat and a bit of freindly banter. Still that's the Gold Coast I guess, beautiful one day, crowded the next.

that really fustrates me... i cope a littel bit now ranging from "where's your short board" to "sea sweeper" .. but i have been soooooo lucky not to cope any negativity..

its such a pity the coast is getting so crowded, and people intolerant of others..

Suprised me as well. I surfed there twice last week and not a peep out of anybody - it was even a little bit friendly. The strange thing is that last week was a weak 1ft and everybody shared and had fun and today was a fairly consistent waist to shoulder high and heaps of waves for everyone but some people just have to bitch I guess. People are always asking me why I surf alone on crap beachies 99% of the time - this is why. It doesnt so much make me angry, it just disappoints me and dealing with the crap on the points is just tiring and not worth the effort. I really had to bite my tongue and not remind these guys that it is only average surf in september with a moderate crowd - man if they hate us now - WAIT FOR SUMMER - it is going to be out of control and especially as the alley is almost at capacity - people will start looking further afield for a sup surf and the next most accessible spot is greenmount.

Hey j, the goldy doesn't have the monopoly on intolerance - it's the world in general. Give and take doesn't exist anymore - its just TAKE.

That really sucks , maybee their have been a few suppers doing the wrong thing down their.Maybee its just the excuse these grumpy buggers need to vent.

Either way i wouldnt be puttting up with that rubbish. And i wouldnt move on to the shore break either.

Next time give as good as you get , you have as much right to be out their as any body else.

I've been through a similar scenario there as well , an old guy on his mal was just started spraying us with abuse.... I tried being nice but it didn't work so I gave it back just as hard , I said mate your on mal and your abusing me what about all the shortboarders waves you are taking , he replied I've got short board at home , so I told him to F**k off and go home and get it and then give me a hard time.

He went in and didn't come back out , but my surf was ruined no -one else out said a thing after that but that's not the point it's really only a hand full of the old hard arsed surfers who still think there 18.

Thinking about it I have never copped any grief off a short boarder only old pricks on mals.

I have'nt been back since , I mainly now just jump in the boat and go to straddie or hit the beaches.

We have the same issues here in Hawaii and we are the ones responsible for re-introducing the sport!. Longboarders gumble about shortboards, shortboards grumbled about longboards, bodysurfers grumbled about bodyboarders, windsurfers whined about kiteboarders. Cant we all just get along!!!!

I just don't understand this mentality that makes someone think he has a right to be out there and someone else doesn't. And to start judging somebody by what they are riding is equally stupid. A dkhead on a short board will be a dkhead on a mal, sup, goatboat, whatever. It's like judging somebody by the car they drive. Where's that "kooks" vid that Hilly posted a while back?

Great vid, after 18 months surfing Noosa , Point Cartwright and Moffats[ nearly every day of the week] can"t say I've had one negitive experience. The only time would be when Woogie was having a warm up before the state tittles at Coolum some guy had a spray at him,If you look at the population of south east Queensland reaching the 3 million and urban sprawl from The Tweed to Caboulture there will be increasing pressure on all recreation activities.

I was surfing Greenmount with my friend and his 13 year son on SUP's, when this overweight goose, who couldnt hardly surf tore strips on the 13 year kid. He ended up in tears, and will never surf Greenmount again, until he is old enough to thump the bloke.

These guys are absolute wankers, and should understand what surfing is about.

Billboard, there is normally a small sup crew out there most day's between one and half dozen on the weekends.
Gee mate, you must have picked the wrong day,I've never experienced or witnessed any drama between sup's and boardriders.

Billboard, that sucks. I've only surfed Greenmount maybe 30 times on various boards during various holidays, not SUP and everyone seamed friendly. I love the spot. To me I had the feeling no-one new who was local and who wasn't so everyone was respectful (Snapper was a bit different).

I've only ever really had one time when I have got proper lip with eye to eye contact from a mal guy in Vic and my reply was:
"mate, you can hardly even surf!" and I kept paddling past.
He could have been state champ and fully ripped, I had no idea who he was. But he didn't say one more thing. By the end of the session I rekon he was a little interested in SUP but guys like him with that sort of ego will never touch SUP. I'm glad this is the case though as they would give the rest of us a bad name. I wouldn't say I took the right approach but maybe confirmed his insecurities enough for him to keep to himself in the lineup.

Its just hilarous that fat old dudes on mals are acting tough , I love Brendans comment to them.

Or you could say " hey old boy you have your prostate appointment in 20 mins, dont be out here wasting your time mouthing off "

Hey Goatman,
Obviously you weren't in the heat at the Long Reef SPSC meet when the group of smart**** locals were mouthing off at us while we were all wearing our coloured rashies. That was my first experience of true nastiness in the water. The language was disgraceful and the behaviour of dropping in on competitors was pretty low: Given the beach is kilometres long and there were a heap of other breaks they could have chosen, they were obviously trying to be ****holes.

Same reason they moved the Malfunction to Kingscliff. The last event held at Snapper- Greenmount, non competitors were man handling and dropping in all day.
If Billboard could give us the heads up on who abused him, the next time we paddle out we would be more prepared .

Hey guys,

let's stop pigeon-holing mal riders as "fat old guys" or "over 50, fat and bald" as quite a few breezers fit the description, me included. I'm 55, getting thin on top and consider myself fat at 90kg. Tell you what though, I can still dish it out, so don't write us oldies off

I remember a quote from a long time ago that goes something like this; 'old age, wisdom, and cunning will beat youth, dash, and vigour any day'.

My granddad fought in a war so that following generations could live in a country where they were free.
Free to make choices.
Free to speak their truth.
Free to surf where ever and whenever they chose.
I honour his sacrifice.

Hey Mel, yeah I was in one of those heats, but when I saw the aggro I paddled down to the other bank. We were a bit unlucky that day as the 'locals' decided to surf the same bank as us.

As someone said on another topic it's all pretty silly when you hear about things like the tsunami. Probably best to smile and tell em to have a nice day in paradise.

Yeah Pete, i'm certainly over 50 not bald, yes a little overweight,i dont get to surf as often as i would like, due to work etc,so when i do, i want to have lots of fun, but not at the expense of others. So it does go both ways ,i was surfing Point impossible one beautiful morning,(on my mal)there was a great vibe in the water that morning .Until 4 guys on various board sizes-mostly short, arrived and started stinkeyeing everyone in sight.Quite funny as most of the guys who were in prior to them arriving are what you would call locals -regulars,any way there is a guy who surfs there regularly who is 75 yrs old and a top guy.As you would expect he is given a pretty good go by those who know him, except by this punk about 25-30,who starts telling him he has no right being out there and f###king up his waves.Well b4 i or anyone else can jump in tell this f#####r to zip it,Frank levels him with a very cold stare and tells him to come back in 25 years when it will be a fair fight, and that only 10 years ago he was still a better surfer than him.Sh1tloads of laughter sent this guy from the water with his tail well and truely between his legs.So sometimes its better to be good with a come back rather than most peoples reaction to get into it.

Good one Rod, I should have added the word 'verbally' after I said 'I can still dish it out'...but then again "The only way to get the best of an argument is to avoid it" (Dale Carnegie).
