Im 1st time glassing a SUP

Im concerned about the rails

Know any helpful links to guide me.

I was going to epoxy 3 x 6 oz on top and 2x 6oz on bottom.

Can I lay 2 or 3 layers cloth and pour epoxy at the same time or will this be a mess?

Rails ( I did see surfer steve- but I need more help)

what is the best method of folding the cloth on the rails when glassing?

any tips?

___________
In the area of the FCS plugs do I need any strengthener when sinking a hole for the plugs?

You can do all layers at once (per side).
- Pour resin on
- Squeegy it out towards the rails (be thorough but quick as the foam soaks up the resin)
- When you get close to the rails you want to totally wet out the glass that will go over the rails. You do this by lifting the
glass out from the rail with your fingers and squeegying resin over the cloth. This will make the cloth stick when you wrap the rail.
Keep an eye on it as they like to un stick

* try get as much resin out of the glass on the deck as you can, this will keep weight down.

I'm no pro but have watched a lot of people do it, plus the Shaping 101 DVD's and youtube. I've only done it once but
after I almost stuffed it up went back and learnt a lot of the tricks. Good luck!

ah...as for FCS, i got a Speed fin plug that is FCS compatible. I'd recommend these or the plugs that Shapers sell. They will be much stronger. But I'm pretty sure FCS do a one piece plug now as well, you might have them. Not sure about strengthener? I put mine in after glassing with just tinted resin and haven't had a problem.

Yep I agree. Teaches you everything. But write down the steps cos I forgot 1 or 2 which made life difficult. Won't make the same mistake again!

watched plenty of times. 2 6oz top and bottom with a patch on standing area. gauge a line from rails on the other side to glass area and tape off, run another in side that again, peel up a bit and use rolled up bits of tape to hold it up. it just a bit hard to work over the rails. sand raisl and the tape off and repeat to other side for glassing. if you get the time right you can just snap the glass and tape off this time use fcs (dogbone )fusion plugs- have their own piece of hi density foam block
cheers

Try this for really strong rails, very important for epoxy/eps.

reverse glass, or in other words deck first, one layer and when sets sand lap then glass bottom with one layer, let set and sand the lap.
do this with the layers you mentioned one layer of cloth at a time.

glassing this way is very slow but you will end up with surer strong rails.
using FGI rapid set 30min epoxy is great.

Use throw away gloves and squeege and don't use acetone to wash up.

To really supercharge the glass job try filler coating with epoxy each layer then reglassing the next layer. Reating this each layer.

FCS have special plastic surrounded plugs for eps foam, get hold of these, do not use fcs plugs designed for PU foam they will pop out..Trotter fins also hve a future fin style finbox for fcs fins that are glassed in eps as well and are super.

Go to Mad len at Shapers supplies and buy the epoxy video by Greg Loehr. Essential viewing for anyone asking epoxy questions.
