Just getting into SUP over the last month. I took off on a wave, went into surfers stance , right foot back applying weight , rotated my upper torso to the left to jam the paddle into the wave. Next thing was a whack in the middle of my right hammy. Sports Physio , who is excellent says it is a significant injury . Grade 2. Out of action for one month.
Anyone else done a hammy surfing?

Hey Jeremy,

I have learned 1 thing since my back injury at work, you really have to stretch hard before every surf session.

I met with a surf coach Heather Peck and she developed a stretch routine for me to ensure everything gets warmed up before I even get in the water.

Lots of people laugh at me rolling on the sand and contorting into dumb ass positions but I would rather do that than get a grade 2 tear.

Suping puts lots of load onto all parts of your core and especially your legs, I also do a lot of swiss ball stretching that helps alot too.

Best regards

phill

Thanks for the tips Phil. I will definitely be being doing a few stretches in the future. My injury occurred after supping for a couple of hours. My physio said the two risk times are..when you start if you havent stretched and warmed up and second risk time when you are fatigued.
I think the latter in combination with the biggest wave of the session were contributing factors.
Another factor was perhaps my technique. I surf/sup left foot forward. Im not sure what the best technique for making the board cut hard left. I used my weight and as well tried to put the paddle in the water , by rotating my upper torso to the left. THis resulted in my right knee going from flexed to extended and sudden stretch of hammy.

Cheers Jeremy

Woah! that is nasty looking Jeremy Hammies can be really difficult to recover from. Get some ice and compression on that sucker ASAP. It would be worth buying some Skins to wear on it of you dont have some already.

Strectching is good, as is knowing your limits. Fatigue can lead to nasty injuries. Sometimes you just have to listen to your body and come in. Even if its pumping out there.

One sure rule of thumb.
The older you are the easier you break.

Its 14 days now since i did it. When i did it I could walk with great difficulty. Fortunately my wife and daughter were on the beach so they carried my board. There was no way i could carry it. THe bruising was a bit worse than it should have been as where we were staying i had no compressive bandage. I will be adding that to my medical kit, and also keeping so frozen peas in the fridge. I did ice it and put my leg up on the day of injury but not as much as i should have.
!4 days on it is starting to improve a lot. I'll give it the full month. What i cant understand is I'm only 53 yo. Why me. As Leonard Cohen said at his recent concert at Sandalford (Cohen is 74yo). "the last time I was doing this was 20yrs ago...just a crazy young man with a dream"
I'll be back.

Latest edition of Australian Longboarder magazine has an article showing some stretching exercises.

Having a stretch after a surf also helps, especially for the lower back and shoulders. Usually the same stretches as before a surf.

A physio also gave me the tip to keep the fluids up before and after a surf. A lot of injuries are because you are getting dehydrated and muscle fatigue is setting in during and after a 2 to 3 hr surf. Water is the best, he suggested staying away from the "sports drinks".

i did a grade 1 ml to my back knee(i,m natural stance) falling off heel side when i was starting. my back foot was stuck to the deck pad and i just about watched my knee buckle.what made it worse was having the paddle on the side i was falling, i couldn,t let go of it, i kinda bent myself in half, hence the knee injury. falling off toe side doesn,t seem to be a problem. since then i ,ve heard other people doing knees. first time i,ve heard of a hammie. i,m wondering if you were falling off heel side?these days if i don,t think i can stay on when i,m wobbling heel side i just jump off. for me its never been a problem on shortboards because they just tip with you, where as a paddle board more often than not will just sit there flat while you fall off

You might have injured your hammy because of related back issues, although they tend to tear higher up towards the glutes though. Could be worth looking into. Hope you're up and running soon.
