I'm looking for advice on what's people opinions or correct technique on the distance I should have my bottom hand from the handle when paddling. I don't feel as though I have it correct and im varying it alot when paddling - or is that normal?

My paddling currently is ocean as often as i can in varying conditions of side chop, headwind and small downwind bumps to dead flat river cruising and time trial stuff

Thanks

Pretty normal IMO.. Most people get lazy and reduce the distance between the hands.. Some people put a piece of tape around where the lower hand should be so when they don't feel it they realise they need to reach down more with the lower hand.. Always remember to fully dip the blade so a wide grip requires some bending (pivot from the hips).. and one last thing.. Don't have a grip on the lower hand like you're holding a hammer.. Open the hand slightly at the pulling part of the stroke and hang more off your fingers... Anyway.. That's what I think..

Kierannq, head to the quckblades website and go to the video section. On the right hand side there are a series of technique videos that Jim Tyrrell has recorded about paddling that are very helpful, including hand positioning.

Like the other said, plus think of the space between hands as gears on a bike/car. Get the hands far apart for lower gear, closer for high gear. Or, if you feel you have to force on your arms, widen your "stance"
