Hey people:
I have a Methane paddle that's got me baffled- I sanded it back and cleaned it with metho before I glued it with Selleys Araldite. Having done this twice now I'm a bit confused as to why I keep twisting the top off my paddle so easily. Any thoughts?

Is the araldite failing or the bond between the paddle and the glue?

Well I bought a new tube of araldite (the double barrel tubes where you mix the two components.) But I'd say the araldite is probably failing as you can just peel it off and it's a yellowish colour. Having said that.

I've never left the paddle in the sun too long or anything though- I keep my paddles inside in the shade...

Having said that- I have a kia kaha paddle by woogie marsh that is yet to come unstuck and that was glued with the first old tube of glue that the methane was stuck together with the first time.

The inside of the handle pice is this grey grainy material like sand which I imagine isn't great for adhesion. Does anyone elses handle piece have a different interior?

(So in answer to your question, probably both, but much more likely the two surfaces are not good enough to be stuck together- despite my best efforts)

Sorry - was thinking out loud with last post- I think it's the bond that's failing, not the glue. Just interested to hear how others have gone with this handle or if there's something wrong with mine re the grey grainy material.

This might help.. www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=39056&SearchTerms=cutting,a,carbon,paddle

Another reason for the problem might be those stupid glue dispensers that often don't give equal amounts of the two parts of the glue.. More of one or the other will make the glue fail.

Hey Intrinsik, we often scour the shaft (that goes inside the handle) with a file, not sandpaper. Clean with Acetone or Thinners and use marine grade epoxy.
Araldite (not 5 minute, it is weaker) should work, (not sure about metho, though?) but if you are having problems the above should fix it.

The only time we use 5 minute Epoxy is when we may need to 'crack' it off, later and shorten the shaft.

Cheers

Cheers guys- I will definitely try putting holes in with the screw driver to prevent twisting off, and acetone with marine epoxy sounds good. Third time's a charm :)

I had the same problem and got sick of it...so i used windscreen sealer and i can promise it wont move a bit.

Just dont snap your shaft as it may be impossible to get it off lol
