Hey guys,

We are off to Hawaii for about 10 days and are wondering where the best paddling spots on both Oahu and the Big Island are.

I have been paddling for a couple of months now, but my girlfriend has never paddled and is keen to give it a go so ideally we're looking for somewhere that will be ok for a beginner.

Any other general info, recommendations, etc also welcome!

Thanks.

For begginer I would say Ala Moana beach park as its sheltered from any waves and plenty of other begginers there too. In my opinion march/April is some of the best surf on the North Shore as all the Pros and sponsors have left. The sand banks are in perfect places and heaps less crowded.

Was in Waikiki in March, Have been paddling for appx 3 yrs but surf skills less than desirable to the point i stay out of it. After some research i opted for lessons with Kai Sallas. Took me to a couple of quiet spots out of Waikiki, Had an absolutely excellent time and would recommend his school.I am more than confident now in my abilities and understanding of surf and sup'n.

I reckon a bit of local knowledge is a good thing in the islands, I would support the idea of taking some lessons with a local company, let them show you the places that are safe and your not going to get your head handed to you if you annoy a large local.
