my finbox came loose- so I pulled it out.
The box was set in what looks like a soft white rubbery seal- ????
then the box was epoxied in after the sealer it seems.
Is this correct?
or should the box be epoxied in directly into the cut out in the polystyrene?
why is there a white (sealer) between the polystyrene and the finbox?

Not sure wht brand sup it is but if is a us type box, i would recommend it is set into hard foam which is set into the polystyene. Dyvinicell is a type of hard foam that can be used. if you dont want to go to that extent, i suggest you use microspheres mixed into epoxy resin and set you box in with this. Once this is set you will need to sand the bottom of you board around the fin box then apply fiberglass sheet and use expoxy resin. I recommend atleast 2 layers on 4 oz cloth. Do you have any photos?

Make sure you dig out all the compressed foam around it , don't be afraid to dig a big hole around the box just set the box in light weight filler (micro spheres)and glass over it, this will give you a much stronger repair.

Just be carefull when filling a large hole in eps, it will insulate the large volume of resin/qcell mix causing heat to build up, the mix may then melt/disolve the eps & you will end up with china syndrome!
Better if you can get scraps of pvc, divinicell or klegicell etc, to fill larget gaps, lighter & less resin required.

LSD is right. If you need a large amount of filler, you will end up with a huge hole. The box should be a neat fit or if not, hard foam is required. Klegcell is another brand.
