Summer is still about five weeks away.. Can't wait..

After 3-4 days of beautiful sunny weather and great downwinding conditions Melbourne has now gone back into a mini ice age.. Brrrrr.. Bugger!..

Monday and Tuesday we expect temps back up to about 30 deg.. WaaHoo! ..

Anyway the other day we had a beautiful sunny day and enough wind to do another downwinder and I got some more vid with my GoPro camera and home made mount.

I'm back on my new 14' Glide and the music is from the new 'Savages' movie.

that was good to watch DJ...Couple of questions I hope you can guide me on...What are the best days to do a downwinder in Port Phillip Bay...wind directions and knots?..I have a 12 6 starboard and have only paddled in flat conditions but would love to try and ride swells as seen in your vid...also any suggestion on departure point and end location...I'm assuming you need to get someone at the other end to pick you up? ...or do you do the hard yards and paddle back against swell and wind? Thanks in advance.

You are welcome to join us any time.. North winds are best.. and at least 20 knots.. We normally do St Kilda to Sandy and it takes a little over an hour.. You could shorten it and just go from Pt Ormond (Elwood) to Green Pt (it's at the end of this vid and where South Rd meets Beach Rd) .. You do need two people to do a car shuffle unless you can get someone to pick up up or drop you off.

What type of Starboard 12'6" do you have?

It's a 14ft DC flat water, there will be one at the Merimbula classic later next month, well worth getting down there and taking it for a paddle,

Hey DJ wondered why you weren't hungry after the paddle last week

I've done it a few times the other way and each time I think.. never again.. It's hard work.. Very messy compared to our northerlies and the swells always seem to head toward the shore.. Maybe if you get way out it might get better.. Also being out there on a southerly on a bigger board (16-17) helps heaps.. You don't need the big boards on the northerlies because it's cleaner.. But then even the cleaner northerlies are often pretty messy.. but no where near as messy as the southerlies.. I think if you want to DW the southerlies you need to head down /Rosebud way and head back towards Dramana.

Hi Bruce.. Next DW'er we do we can swap boards for a while if you like.

I think you will find the new shape 14' Glide very different.. and better in most areas.

It's a bit more stable.. It's got better glide.. and seems to surf better.. It is also easier to control in those opposite rail turning situations because the rails are less catchy.

The trade off with that extra speed/glide is because of it having less nose rocker the nose goes under more easy but because the Glide handles pearling so well it's not such an issue.

I'm loving it and will probably only pull out my old shape Glide for those blistic days or when I want to take a friend on and downwinder who doesn't have a DW board.
