Hobie have just signed up three time long board world champ Colin McPhillips.

www.supsurfmag.com/features-stand-up-paddle/news/hobie-signs-3x-longboard-world-champion-colin-mcphillips-to-its-team-20100107881/

Shame they don't put more effort into getting their boards into shops down under..

hi, i hand a sup at 13th just after ny. had a ball, then pulled out the shortie. not so much fun- a bit boring sitting around and i notice you can't see the waves like on sup. i keep telling myself i have to get back on the shorties a bit, but it doesn't seem to be happening. i sometimes think sups might be the dominiate surf craft in the distant future

Hey Lacey,

Merry Christmas Happy New Year!

Short boards make excellent coffee tables or so I am told!

Whats this might be!!!!! it WILL be the number 1 surf sport.

No longer do sups just go to the fat points every beach break now has them. The future of SUP is scary..

It's funny all these pro guys changing over, and the funny thing is they try to ride a sup like a mal or surf board, insted it needs to be ridden like a sup. Interesting times ahead i feel!!!!!

I do.. What Jacko means is that a long boarder can surf a sup and just hold the paddle like he doesn't quite know what to do with it and it just looks wrong.. IMO

Sure it's all surfing but different in the same way a knee boarder surfs compared to a boogie boarder etc..

ok, what i meant is the number of sups in the water "could" be more on a given day, anywhere in the world maybe in the future. i'm not saying anything more or less and yes, it is all surfing and it doesn't matter what you use. i'll be happy on my sup thankyou

ok, back to the topic.hobie had a stand at the coffs race. they had 2 of their stinger type boards which to me and a few others really didn't look that impressive. kinda of old hat looking, but in having said that i didn't try one and they could be good.they reminded me of the mac-t range in that older retro styling and it seems the mac-t 9' is the best board in their range. however their race boards look the goods with 12'6,s and 14',s on show. that American guy byron had a proto type blue 14' which seriously looked like it was hot wired for outline and rocker and deck line and had the corners rolled off a bit, some v in the bottom and a scooped out deck and that was it.the most interesting board there and he certainly paddled it quick and won the lc race.so imo, keep an eye out for their race board for sure and their paddles look good and are lightweight
cheers

i think on their web site they talk about a new shape for their race boards where in their old shape was wide point back but they are going wide point forward for the next series,a lot of these guys will do an old shape early in their range for surf but because they are being mass produced it will take a while to catch up to the latest shapes ..once again its part of the problem of designing a shape and having to sell that run before a new shape can be produced.

tried to find that about the widest point bit.i have got a hold of a second hand xp vertice and it widest point is back and i have found it's really nice to step back on when you have too, really stable and turnable so i would have to say if that's the case it is a bit disappointing for me

Hopefully the really fast boards won't turn out to be pigs - that's when the sport really polarises. Racers end up on boards that are fast but aren't fun and the gap between recreational and racing just gets wider and wider - bit like what happened with Formula boards in windsurfing.

Ive watched quite a bit of fotage of Colin mcphillips both on longboard and Stand up.
Ive got to say probably has one of the best "StandUP Paddle" Cutbacks in the buisnness. Fluid, controlled with speed. He knows his way around a board and knows what to do with a paddle. Great allround surfer.
Be worth chasing down some footage of him on the interweb......

One thing that gives me the sh-ts is, the constant bagging of longboarders wtf.
Do you really think your going to dominate your local breaks with attitude like your showing,I think not.
Now Colin is a great boardrider short, long or sup, he would still rate longboarding as his pet activity and probably only jumps on a sup when condition are best suited.
