I basically will be earth bound - cause my wallet dont run deep enough to afford the prices of a SUP. I tried old windsurfers which worked well for a beginner. (especially ones from the 1970's)

Now Im making a SUP.

I am 1/2 way through my first board.

shaped the polystyrene block.

Im using NO stringer.

QUESTION
1. Can i exopy it WITHOUT vacuum baging and get enough strength not to snap in std conditions?

2. How many layers of which oz. is best?

mizarc,
Do you know the density of styrene in the foam? The quick answer is yes but;
Normally boards that have no dvynicell are around 25kg/cubic meter.
Boards with the dyvinicell are typically 12kg/cubic meter. The lighter density foam will require more fiberglass to give strength however too much fiberglass will make it too heavy. Does this make sense?

i know sweet f a , about making boards.

but i was comparing some divinacell and core cell, a while ago and i was thinking the corecell would be better for sups.

as mentioned before ....dont take my word, do a bit of research to confirm.

ps... good on ya for building a board, keep us updated with progress,,,, and try and reinforce the actual stand up area, with a couple of extra layers, and maybe do some sideways stringers (i just made that up, so could be more b/s)

i really dont have a clue, but i would love to build my own sup or windsurfer

Hi mate, it might also be worth looking at www.treetosea.org for some ideas on wooden boards...theres also some good info on strengthening and glassing different types of matierials

Hi Mizarc

I was exactly where you are 9 months ago, no coin in the wallet but keen to get into sup. I have made 3 boards now and no 4 on the drawing board. My first board 11ft 6in, I used medium density foam and put 3 layers of 6oz glass on top and bottom, I found that this was as solid as a rock(no stringer). Second board 10ft I used medium foam again but only 2 layers 6oz top and bottom with a patch of 4oz where i stand most of the time, I glued in a stringer but took most of the weight out of the ply by cutting holes out with a holesaw. Check out a website www.surfersteve.com he runs through the whole board making process. Good luck it gets addictive.

they said 16 density. (24 is too heavy apparently)

so how much glass etc on 16?

Hi Mizarc, as I mentioned in my reply to your PM 2 x 6oz on the bottom and 3 x 6oz on the deck with an extra 6oz in the standing position is probably as close to industry standard as you can get for epoxy resin and glass over EPS foam, without using the vacuum method.

Check out this link from Sup surf Mag, actually everyone should check it out.
