Surf at Hookipa earlier this week, great photos Rick77 took.

Only a few people SUP at Hookipa - Dave, Laird , Robby and maybe a couple of others - respect for the surfers, and your health

Looks like that brutal Hookipa trades were really kicking it! I have come to enjoy the windy days, less crowd and real challenging!

Hi DJ,

Sorry I don't know who was on the SUP in the photo, there were three guys out on SUP's that morning and also a few surfers.

The guy in the photo just before it was taken got caught inside of a larger set and still managed to get out after getting worked.

It was amazing to watch them try to paddle into these waves with the wind adding to the difficulty factor! Because of the wind most takeoff's were very late!

The photo doesn't do justice as this was one of the smaller sets of the morning.

The other photo was on Nov 1. He was the only person out at that time!

Looks like a new swell is coming towords the end of the week...

THURSDAY
East winds 20 kt. Wind waves 7 to 8 ft. Northeast swell 10 to 11 ft. Frequent heavy showers.

FRIDAY
East winds 20 kt. Wind waves 9 to 10 ft. Northeast swell 11 ft. Frequent showers.

I'll try to take some photos of Hookipa later in the week!

Great photos

Paddle out would be tricky did they get caught inside much?

Excellent pictures and big surf. I bet the paddle out is hard (although I think there's a channel) however the wave itself looks quite easy... I could be totally wrong though.

Surfed there 10 yrs ago, at that size there is not a clear channel from the beach. Would be ok when out the back as the peak is pretty defined, but the initial paddle would be exciting to say the least.

Would be significant current and chop/bounce off the rocks.

Thanks for the comments!

The swell is meant to drop a little tomorrow but I will drive by tomorrow morning to see if I can get more shots

The two paddlers suppping together were catching waves at lanes, between lanes and the middle break of Hookipa there is a channel and as Hilly described at this size the waves were breaking across the channel.

I was mainly watching the guy in the last picture (Hookipa Nov12-06)... he was out the back of the middle break when I arrived. For 45min he was waiting for the bigger sets, trying to paddle into the biggest wave (most of the bigger waves were closing out), in that 45min he got close but didn't catch a wave.

The other two were in lanes and the waves were a little smaller and their seemed to be a longer break between the bigger sets for them paddle out. (to be honest I didn't watch them paddle out much as I was hoping to get a photo the guy on the middle break drop into a big wave)

A couple of more photos... first one is for DJ - Can you guess who owns the pick up truck with the 4 boards (if you get it in one guess I will shout you a drink!)

Second photo shows the shorebreak in front of the middle break, it doesn't look to bad compared to normally Hookipa, but you can see further out that the channel used to get out is closing out

Cheers

Rick

Sorry no more Suping photos from Hookipa, yesterday morning there were only a handful out including a bodyboarder in large unorganised short period swell.

Late yesterday afternoon I took some photos near Hookipa, of some wavesailing, sorry no-one supping, I have attached two as it gives you a really good indication of what a great wave it is for any water craft...(long steep walls with makable sections!)

Cheers Rick

Watch the video to see a slide show of the large NE swell hitting Maui at Kahului Habour...

the last few photos you can see Kai Lenny riding a wave on a SUP, his dad is on a jetski with a photographer on the back taking photo's!
