Actually I gave up without a fight..

Being a committee member of SupVic means that I need to set an example of doing the right thing.. So today I bought a new PFD jacket for doing our down-winders.

Today was a solid 30-40 knots and tomorrow is looking better.. .. and I hope the water Police will see I'm a good boy from a distance and leave me alone.

It's pretty cumfee and didn't cost much.. Now I can carry my camera, CamelBak bladder and munchies..

DJ out of interest how much did it cost and where did you get it from?

I ask because firstly i think they are a great idea as you never know what can happen out there and secondly I have a mate who i am taking out on his first downwinder and he is not the most experienced on the open water (not many Zimbabweans are) and having one of those on him will give him a lot of confidence.

cheers

I bought it from a great shop near where I live called 'Canoes Plus'.. www.canoesplus.com.au/

They have them on special marked down from $160 to $140.. It's a good quality PFD and not too high like most.. so you don't look like Harry Highpants..

I'd like to see the fear on your pussy faces when you can't hear anything while pushing your toes so far into the board clinging for life as you bounce around the wild swells in gale force conditions on these runs. There is nothing quite like a wild downwinder and the day you do one you too will come out looking like a lost jesus freak at the end of it.

BTW how would the PSH gun go in less (way less) extreme conditions or should I be looking at a more suitable board.

Gorgo was on the PSH gun on this day - he said it was ok. But I think you could do better. I use my naish 11'6 which isn't ideal either and in these conditions I only fell off a couple of times. I find it takes a great deal of concentration to stay stable. DJ now rarely falls off in the wildest of swells.

You'ld be fine petemc - hopefully my fence blows down tomorrow and I've got an excuse to get the morning off - htfu petemc and join us - you will be converted.

Hi petemc you will be fine on the Gun - everything works, I've done one on my 9'6 Naish and still managed to catch runners. It's all good and the reality is that despite all the bravado stuff it's all about good fun and when it's really wild looking after your mates is top priority (after taking photo's of them in trouble !!) When it's 35 to 40 knots you could do it on a lilo. The funny thing is that what seems to go first are your legs then your brain - you really concentrate, the actual paddling part is easy as long as your heading pretty much downwind. And if you get really tired doing it on your knees is actually pretty good too - you still catch plenty of waves on your knees.

It's just a great experience with some mates - with a bit of fear to spice it up! The basic big boards like the Naish 11'6 or the Starboard 11'2 are perfect to start on. Why don't you borrow the 11'6 Naish from SHQ and come with us tomorrow if you can get off work. Can almost guarantee you won't dro..... voldermort.

Do the photos relate to this??? as 20 to 30 knots looks different over here; more like the picture oliver posted.

They lied again.. It was only 20 knots dead offshore to start with and looks carm in these pics but it was blowing pretty strong.

It dropped a little and then kicked in at 20-30 knots about half way across.

My new PFD was great.. So cumfee and did not restrict my paddling at all.

At the start we didn't have to paddle as we got pushed straight towards Point Ormond.. We were waiting for the waves to pic up.

Oliver ahead catching some little runners.

Waiting for Oliver to catch up.. and the wind was getting stronger.. and the waves bigger.

Oliver on a nice little runner cruising past me.

Back at Point Ormond and feeling good..

Hilly, i think the area is a place I used to paddle in where the pictures are taken. It is actually at the top end of the bay and is somewhat protected by a big breakwater and some heavy machinery areas for the port. It can be a bit protected from a northerly until you get offshore a bit.

Also, the winds we have had this week seem to be a bit off/on and inconsistent at times. And yes, I agree the other pics look more like a howling wind!
