As an Australian id only be worried if the Uk started to beat us. Some 300 million people in the USA and about 1/10th that here. Plus it seems these events will always be furthest from Aus/NZ so that always thins the field for competitors going.
Unless most of the Australian team gets stuck in a foreign country on the way over in an air travel SNAFU, the UK are never gonna be a threat to you. We don't have a tradition of ocean sports so there has been no pre-existing local club infrastructure to build upon, plus it is very cold, windy and wet here for half the year which makes training very hard, and we just do not have a "sports culture" in this country like you do, so we have very few full-time athletes -and none in SUP. Basically, our team are a bunch of amateurs with day jobs who receive little or no financial support, and mostly train alone in largely miserable conditions. Plus, we couldn't field a full team. It's amazing that they came mid-table really.
But in the UK we love to root for the underdog, and since it looks like you've just become that, we will now be cheering for you almost as much as our own paddlers.
It's a shame that Annabel Anderson wasn't there to give Candice something to think about. Although the NZ team did amazingly well considering the size of the population. And would Travis Grant now paddle for you or Hawaii?
You weren't much in front of Hawaii. So maybe next year you will be third? Hawaii have a lot of youngsters up-and-coming, and for their first appearance at this event it was a great effort.
